Re: Vintage equipment ID help
Thats a roll of aluminum foil, with a beige thingy on top of it! No, really it is, indeed, one of the old Motorola 'consolette' control systems. I worked on a lot of these in the 70's. They typically are either DC Line outputs or multiconductor outputs that connect them to the base radio. Look for a...

Re: microwave at a radar site
I have a 1 Megawatt ERP radar at 120' elevation about 400' away from my main tower. I have 7 GHz. dishes at 500' and 700' on the main tower. Before that I had 2 GHz. dishes at the same elevations. The major problem I have with the microwaves is temperature inversions, I've never seen any interferenc...

Re: Motorola Duplexer Identification
IIRC, these are Motorola T1500 UHF series cans, but I've never seen a duplexer configured this way. Typically there are 2 connectors on each can and specific length cables connecting the cans together. I've never seen a 1500 series duplexer with UHF connectors either. All fo them I've worked on have...

Re: MSF5000 PA Problem
Could it be something as simple as the reference voltage on the power set pot? Does the wiper voltage change as you change the power setting? Is the filter cap on the reference side blown or shorted? Is the dropping resistor on the reference side open? Is the low side ground open?

Re: Motorola Motrac Help
IMHO, the MHT series are, pound for pound, the best radios Mother M made. Good luck, though, changing frequency ranges and if the Permakay filter goes you're SOL, as far as I know. Excellent receivers, ultimately repairable, great audio. I was lucky enough to order the replacement helicals when &quo...

Re: What to use to clean radios ?
I agree with using Plexus!! Just be aware that it is slightly abrasive, so wipe in horizontal or vertical direction only, and always go the same direction. If you wipe H one time and V the next it WILL eventually cloud a display screen.

Wire the mikes in parallel, but make sure the PTT on each mike switches its mike element off when released. - Jim

Wow!! What a vault of information on the pvpcom.com site!!! Gives me lots of ideas for configuring MY bike. I have several GP300s and M1225s for the commercial radio. Was thinking about using my FT-50 as the amateur side, and I was planning to use the hole for the AM/FM for a mixer/control panel. I ...

Haven't seen much on this subject, and I know there's got to be a lot of expertise in this area here. I recently bought an '06 ex-police Electra-Glide. Love the bike, and Harley provides special harnesses for the radio, siren and lights. I have the manuals for the bike, including the Harley harnesse...

Re: Most Rugged Motorola Equipment
The HT220 was, IMHO, virtually indestructable...finicky to get tuned and working, though and a real pain to repair. I carried an MX330S for years with NO problems. Only weak point was the flex circuit.

Add hoisting grips every 200 feet or so of line, plus one at the top for securing to the tower with a quick-link or the like.

Re: Good Tower engineering company?
I'd ask the Chief Engineer at KWCH who they use and try to work through that rigger. That way the station doesn't have someone unfamiliar with their tower on it. Most riggers can readily give you a list of parts/pieces you'll need to attach the line to the tower properly. Do a little research in the...

Re: microwave path testing?
Any good supplier should have the ability to give you a case study on each of your planned links. Most will do it for free just to get a chance to bid on the equipment and installation. Some are extremely reliable and some are speculation. If they won't give you a printout, they're probably just spe...

When I first started flagging for the SCCA, I didn't particularly care for the brand of headsets they used. They have an analog multichannel system, conventional tone PL in / DCS out on VHF. I 'eBayed' a decent looking David Clark headset. The earpieces are 300 ohms each. I paralleled them together ...

I fully realize that I'm an old fart, but my hand fits perfectly around a high power HT220!!!! If you can't get to your pistol, you can use it to incapacitate the perp, and it'll still work when you call in to have a call for assistance downgraded. Besides, they just look cool. Second place goes to ...

An alternative I've used for years is here: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1086960&Sku=M501-1030 ...$10 bucks and you get a permanent enclosure. If all else fails, there's an old serial transfer program called 'Fastwire' that works very well....slow, b...

Re: Managing users on Smartzone System
How about setting up zones by county? Sounds like your talking about Highway Patrol, yes? North Carolina has 100 counties. If I were given this scenario, I would consider setting up 100+ zones, with each of the local agency interop channels within the zone. Officers are usually pretty aware of count...

All the guys above pretty much nailed it. Looking at the Andrew (now Commscope) catalog, a 10' gridpak at 2.1 GHz. will have a midband gain of 32.8 dbi with a beamwidth of 3.7 degrees. A 6' solid 'Standard' dish will have 29.4dbi gain with a 5.5 degree beamwidth. A 6' solid 'High Performance' antenn...

Spend the bucks and buy a Bird and the slugs!! Recently I had the company's fancy HP power meter refuse to 'zero'. The closest available replacement was 26 miles away. Several questions I haven't seen asked or answered thus far.... Is LE looking for additional operational functions (in-the-field computers)? Is the municipality thinking about adding additional users (buses, garbage trucks, school buses, meter maids)? Is there a real danger of jamming the analog sys...
