this EXACT thing happened to radios that were programmed to follow IGN only, and then had the batteries die in the chassis of the (poorly) designed unit. Mobile radio would give you low-power beep and become functionally useless. Pulling fuses and charging chassis batteries would fix it

Don't the MCS2000 use serial data txfer to communicate between radio head and chassis? create a new codeplug from scratch (from the templates) with your settings, and write it in. They don't like read-change-write, it corrupts the codeplug. Try that see if it works. I had one that was about 4 days from read-change-write to bizarre attitudes and random reverts to CSQ, fresh clean codep...

yes, i've run RSSes in DosBox, CPSes under wine ( eesh) and more reliably under VMs. I've committed my archives to that unit, but have a old writer of a system that I use for blasting the codeplugs in. i'll try writing one day, maybe.

I've seen that happen when people randomly throw a battery charger on a vehicle with a flat battery in it, and then wonder why the electronics get all goofy. Voltages from 16-18vDC are not uncommon on the chargers we have at work.

I'll bet that this isn't a regulated power supply, but a battery charger, don't those things routinely go upwards of 18v with irregular loads on them?

As a side note, one of the comments made at a recent meeting I attended is that fire service, particularly non-career, have commented that by the time the computer is fired up and logged in, they are at the call! One thought would be to use a solid state drive in a laptop to reduce the time it take...

Around my area ( central CT ) most PS frequencies are all UHF ( and all quickly going P25 as well ). There are a few 800MHZ P25 systems ( State Police being one of the first ), and VERY few VHF PS frequencies. So I'd go with UHF followed by 800MHZ. Go South of hartford its VHF and UHF and Low Band ...

pie plate (or sheet metal disc) as a ground plane, glued like hell to the membrane roof should suffice for your antenna...although that will get mighty big as your frequency drops..

...what's wrong with the mic? PTT doesn't work? IIRC the HFSA1 has a hard wired mic, so you'd be forced to crack the chassis to replace it. If you're going to be cracking the chassis to replace it, you might as well replace it with an OEM mic.
