What bands are in the radio and what was programmed into it?
It gives the impression that it was inhibited, did you try to read the radio with CPS while it was turned on even though the display was off?

Re: APX8500 G507-12.5 kHz FCC Mandate
We made a lot of noise to /\/\ when the flashcode arrived and it was across the whole VHF and UHF spectrum. They fixed it pretty quickly with a firmware update. I didn’t realize the radio was smart enough to let me do wide band on ham frequencies. I just added a few ham frequencies and it let me do ...

APX7K Volume Knob
I like to find a way to tighten my dated APX7K's volume knob. Too many times when carrying it I would brush up against it and either turn it all the way up or down. I remember in the past that some would put a small O ring on a 5K but haven't researched if physically you can do that on a 7K. Anyone???

Personally, I didn't see much of an audio improvement moving from a 7/8 XTL to a V-7/8 APX7500. But keep in mind that there were big Vocoder improvements make in Ver 12 and 17 in the XTS/XTL FW, so depending on your current version YMMV. If I had to take a stab at it, when they made your child key they used the APX configuration and not the XTS/XTL in the ASK software. I'm pretty sure the core doesn't store it to that much detail, but it is put across the ATIA and Genesis does log it and make it available if you are running that application. I use that piece of data when researching rogue users and duplicated ID's that go places it shouldn't be.

What you don't want to do is leave new boxed Impres batteries in the box on the shelf for a long period of time (~ 1 year).
I had a user do this instead of doing a rotation and lost about 20 batteries that wouldn't correctly charge when he attempted to put them in service.

Allen is correct that the trunking Visar will not do conventional.

You didn't set the TX frequency correct.
Possibly is it a split NAC and your TX NAC isn't correct?

Did you look at the PMAS4001A antenna that is UHF/700/800? It is a tad over 7" and not that bad vs the 8" APX 8K antenna.
I don't know what the performance on VHF would be, but if you are only listening it might be worth the $30.00 gamble.

The internal speaker has its limitations, especially in an automobile environment, and audio quality is better using the external one. In an office environment the front facing speaker is adequate.
