The main difference is the encryption, on the ver 1 it was software based (non FIPS IIRC) and ver 2 uses a hardware UCM. There was also a few other minor changes but don't know off the top of my head.

Gary is correct in regards to Astro units, most of the time will not work in digital mode very far out of band. Astro25 units do not have this issue.

Keep in mind there is NO power control below 146.00Mhz on a high split Maxtrac, I don't know about the GM300 but I bet it is the same. You will need to address that or you will kill your PA in a short time.

It is a flash option, so it will need to be ordered thru Motorola, or enabled at an s-record level. You may or may not need a f/w update I did not see where you had posted your f/w revs. If you have the correct software tools you can go to p25.ca and learn how to edit the s-record and FDB.

The ham RSS that I used did not require any VCO tweaks to work in two meters (on the R2 radios) and it would give 255 channels. RXFE did need a re-tune (it is best to sweep it), and with a preamp they were great. The units I had had firmware that would allow 64 channels in the scan list.

Be VERY careful about updating firmware on a developmental SSE. Some of them will not accept the production firmware and will leave you with a brick.
