Motorola HPD-1000

Can anyone give me some feedback on the Motorola HPD-1000m data modem? Are they of any value to the experimenter, or can they be of any value to the ham community?

Not without the system. I'm told they are much like the VRM - just about useless as a modem. I believe the HPD1000 is it's own radio as well, so probably nothing useful on it. Let us know if you hear otherwise!

If you have a boat, you can use them as anchors, we nicknamed it half performance data.....

The do work well and use standard CPS. You do not need a real IV&D system to use them. They only work in 700/800 MHz and while 900 MHz might be theoretically possible it would be a real effort.

You can use the P25 modulation on simplex but not in HAI mode. Not at least in my experience.

The data rate on 800 MHz is limited by FCC rule restricting the radio to 4FSK modulation and P25 symbol rates in 12.5 KHz but at the 700 MHz in 25 KHz the radio does the high order HAI modulation that delivers the 96 kbps rates these heavy babies can deliver.

So without major hacks and building your own infrastructure they are a curiosity despite the attractive $100 price tag. If you don't have access to spectrum at 800 MHz then you are up for a real (but probably not impossible) to shift them to 900 MHz.

Normal Astro 25 mobile part of RVN4186. You'll find under Radio Information > Feature Set > G858 HPD Operation

I just popped open a code plug and in addition to my previous comments:

On conventional you can only select P25 operation and get the slow P25 packet data system operation (TIA-102.BAEB). As with the XTL/XTS with packet data option W947/Q947. Works the same and is interoperable. If you're into P25 data then the HPD makes a nice base radio because of the Ethernet jack. P25 packet data tx range 764 to 869 MHz to TIA-102.BAEB.

On trunking systems you can select HPD operation with 64QAM HPD supported 794 to 824 MHz.

That's a shame, I was wondering if they could be used in the analog mode, but I guess that is out with the information you have provided.

They also can't be used as IV&D modems on a 9600 trunk system... learned that one the hard way.

Enough of them and you can use them for boat anchors. Or, if you just have a few, wheel chocks. I still have a couple in the shop, they were and are worthless.

Not to resurrect an old thread. Would this to simplex in the 700 range at the higher throughput... one HPD 1000 to another HPD 1000? I need to build an Ethernet bridge for a public safety agency and could PS licenses.
