they can be had oem for 40-60 dollars. Kinda cheap to using a homemade cable.

yes, wanted to give it a try but I understand the risks of bricking the radio. so far no luck with homemade usb cable.
think I have the wrong pinouts.

What radios do you own?: XPR5550, XPR7550e

From page 3-4 of the detailed service manual:

USB:
Pin 1 - VCC (5V) to PIN 3 on radio connector
Pin 2 - DATA - to PIN 5 on radio connector
PIN 3 - DATA + to PIN 4 on radio connector
Pin 4 - GROUND to PIN 1 on radio connector

Looking at the connector cable (NOT the radio), pin 1 is the upper most left pin. The numbering goes down the left side in odd numbers... 1,3,5,7,9,11
The upper most right pin is pin 2 and they go down the right side 2,4,6,8,10,12

perfect, cable all setup as in pinout from service manual. windows fails to load usb driver. need DS2433 chip in the line I'm thinking....

The DS2433 is a 1-Wire EEPROM. It contains a unique ID used to identify whatever device it's built into and possibly some software, so even of you get one it may not work.

Okay, thank you. possibly rule out the DS2433 chip.
will focus on the windows driver
