XPR5550 etc - lowering analog SQ level below default?

Has anybody figured out how to lower the carrier SQ level on a UHF XPR5550 so that the carrier SQ opens on a very weak signal.

There are only 2 SQ levels - normal and tight and my "normal" level is set too high for very weak signals - if you open the SQ (to get white noise) you can copy a weak signal OK.

On my XPR5550. the LED actually lights up on RXing a really weak signal BUT the carrier SQ does not open....so the radio is detecting the weak signal but does not open the SQ until the signal is slightly stronger....so the weak but copyable signal is missed.
