Is M5 Control Head OK for XTL5000? Less problematic than 05?

Post by Leadenwah »

I'm considering an M5 which is for the XTL2500 for use on an XTL5000 ?
My questions are:
Can the M5 be used on the XTL5000 ?
Is the M5 less problematic than the 05 control head series ?
Does the M5 had firmware issues as the 05 ?

M5 for 2500... O5 for 5000. Otherwise you get a "CH MISMATCH" error.

Don't ask me why, it makes no sense.

I second that, M5 only works on 2500 and O5 only on a 5000.

Thanks to you both. You saved me from an expensive mistake.
I'll just stick with the W7. The 05 just seems fraught with problems
and I thought the M5 was an easy way out.

The newer charcoal grey models that say O5 instead of XTL5000 seem dramatically better. I have one of those in the truck, along with 5 of the older style... they are less flaky, better display/contrast, etc... even if they are a little flaky, they're a damn sight better than 8 characters and that infernal VFD!

Thanks, that's well worth a try.
I'll keep an eye out.

What kind of flaky problems are you having with the M5 head. I have been through some of the issues right from the start. The original one I think was the issue of the radio shutting off all by itself. Then there was the scan issue where the radio wouldn't open up the squelch after the first transmission. Both of these were fixed with a firmware upgrade.

If your having an issue, bring it forward and maybe there is someone on here that has the answer. I use an M5 head on an XTL2500 and an 05 head on an XTL5000 every day with no issues. I have 50 zones in it and a ton of channels. What I don't like is that you don't have much for options on multi PL use like you did with the Spectra radios.

You do have the ability to change the squelch setting from the control head. The software defaults to a setting of 6. I find this to be too tight and have set each of my personalities to a default of 3. Then set a button on the control head to allow me to manually adjust it with the frequency knob if I need to. Sort of like changing zones. When your done, you hit the home button to go back to the normal control head operation.

Squelch adjust has been around a long time - since the analog Spectra. Just hold the monitor button...
