Difference in R2001A and R2001C

Post by crash »

Hi everyone! My first post, as I couldn't find the info I need in a search.

I purchased an R2001C, but the manual that came with it is the R2001A model.
I would be willing to trade the A manual for the C, if anyone is interested.

I have looked in the usual spots for a manual, but I could not find a C manual.

Thanks for your patience!

The C was miles ahead of the A model. Be happy with what you have! I think there was no operational changes until the later D models.

I briefly worked for an MSS until my city app was approved. They had retired all of the buggy A models and most that were left were the D models. In my opinion the D was a very good service monitor.

I used a R2008C at a company and in the two years I used it it broke once. I think it was a high voltage problem. In a different company I used a D model that never failed.

I have a DVD with a-d versions. Only the A and D have operator manuals. The C manual may not exist in PDF form.

What I was interested in is the maintenance manual.
I bought one through Tucker for $90.00.
I would like to check calibration, which looks good,
but it has been a decade or more since it was done.
Anyone need a R2001A/R2002A maintenance manual?

Twice now the OP has stated that he is looking for a "C" model maint. manual. That being said, I don't know where you will find one unless at a ham fest or ebay. The manual you have will provide you with the procedures for operation and the proper basic alignment procedures. The main differences between the two models are the LVPS, HVPS, & Processor board. Other boards have some minor differences but you should be able to use the manual you have in a pinch.

By the way, welcome to the board. My name is Dave and I used to work for Motorola in the Test Equipment Service Depot. I worked on the S1327, R1200, R2000, R2200/R2400 series of analyzers and monitors as well as other pieces. If you have any questions about your analyzer, just ask here or send me an email through here and I will help the best I can. Just a word of warning, it's been quite a while since I have worked on one and I do have to go by memory as I don't have any manuals.

Good luck.
Dave

Thanks Dave.
I have the R2001C manual on order from Tucker.
The unit I have failed last night. It looks like the synth died.
I suspect the crystal may have died, but that is just a WAG...
Time is my problem at the moment, as I have too many things
going on at once.

You are right there is an operations section in the C maint manual.

The crystal should have a strong 10 MHz output from the BNC on the back panel. There is also a 10 MHz input if you want to run from an external source. The crystal has it's own power supply of 9 VDC. Also, there are three inductors on the bottom of the motherboard which filter the LVPS to the synthesizer. You might want to be sure one of these didn't open.

Thanks Dave!
If the 10 Mhz is missing, I can pull the bottom and check the MOBO.
I wonder how long midia mail takes from Tucker... I like using the proper manual
when I am working on equipment, I gave up drawing my own parts layouts and
schematics when my eyes needed reading glasses...

My Tucker manual arrived on Saturday afternoon, and my monitor was working Saturday evening!
Only five days via media mail for the manual to arrive.
I found that somewhere, someone had trimmed the pins on the ribbon cable connectors, and
replaced a pair of the connectors with 16 pin headers where they need to be 14 pin.
I need to replace the cables, as they fall out of the sockets too easily now.
If that is all that is wrong, I made a heck of a deal buying this monitor!

I have 2 monitors a really used one and a very clean one. One had short headers from the factory. They had tyraps around the socket to connector to hold them in place. You might try that. On mine there was room under the socket.

Hi Glenn,
Someone had epoxied the connectors, and not well either, so I am just going to make a new set of cables.
Another thing I could do, is put some foam rubber pads over the connectors, and let the bottom cover hold them in place.

Well, it has been a while, and I still have buggy operation of the R2001C.
I have been replacing dried out and leaking electrolytics on the boards,
but the unit still fails. When it has warmed up, you can watch the spectrum
display loose signals, while the base noise increases. Once this happens,
the unit just hisses.

I have confirmed the 10 Mhz master oscillator is still running, however,
I have been trying to monitor the power supply voltages, annd when I do,
the unit stays working...

If only I could monitor it for more than an hour or two at a time!
