XTL1500 - do you need red ignition sense cable?

I have just acquired an XTL1500 which has a built in speaker. It came with no accessory cable but you can see that an accessory plug had been connected given wear to the accessory fixing screw holes.

All the accessory plugs I have are for "external speaker" XTL2500's and XTL5000's.

I have not yet powered up the XTL1500.

I think you can disable ignition sense in CPS..but I guess you need to power up the radio to reprogram it?

So maybe I will initially need the ignition sense connected to power up the radio in order to reprogram it?

What happens if I connect my "XTL5000" accessory plug (with ignition sense and external speaker) to the XTL1500?

Does the XTL1500 just ignore the external speaker?

Are there any other links in an "XTL5000" accessory plug which could cause an issue with the XTL1500?

You will need the emergency switch loop installed in the accy plug to get the radio to ignore the ign sense lead.

The internal speaker has its limitations, especially in an automobile environment, and audio quality is better using the external one. In an office environment the front facing speaker is adequate.

Depending on the application you might want to think about it.

Probably nothing.

Does that mean that its OK to use my "XTL2500/5000" accessory plug with an external speaker connected with my XTL1500 radio? It will not blow the audio amp or anything given that the XTL1500's internal speaker is still connected?

Will I actually get audio out of both the internal and external speaker at the same time? I think that is what happens with my CDM.

If you are really worried about it, go buy a pin tool, and take the speaker out of the accy plug.

There should be a molex type quick disconnect plug on the speaker leads, you just need to unplug it.

According to the spec sheets and installation instructions (both available online, GIYF) the XTL1500 takes a 8 ohm 7.5 watt external speaker. The XTL2500 and XTL5000 can take either the 8 ohm speaker or a 3.2 ohm 13 watt speaker, so you'd have to determine which speaker you have and if it's the higher wattage one don't use it on the 1500.

As there is no hardware difference in the main body between an XTL1500, XTL2500 and XTL5000, why is there a difference in the external speaker impedance requirement?

Maybe its something to do with the XTL1500 internal and external speaker being connected at the same time. Assuming both have an 8 ohm impedance, in parallel this will be equivalent to 4 ohm?

From the Basic Service Manual:
"The audio PA is a bridge amplifier with a 3.2-ohm minimum impedance"

The internal speaker is 20 ohm / 4W.

If you want to get 13W delivered to the speaker you have to reduce the load impedance on the amplifier output to half. Ohm's Law, not rocket science.
