KVL5000?

Post by Andy2712 »

I'm not sure if this topic goes here, but here's my question. I'm looking at getting a KVL for my department. I have a quote for a 4000 but someone told me I should wait for the 5000 to come out because there has been issues with the 4000. Does anyone know if/when the KVL5000 is going to be released?

I am pretty sure that you can order one. However, Motorola in their typical way these days half baked the product. They have been putting in features they think you want and selling the product. 6 months later they will then give you a software update to get you what you need. That was their plan (as they stated it). Check VERY carefully that what you need is supported in the device. The product manager was NOT helpful in explaining if they were going to fully support loading of Astro25 (XTL/XTS15/25/5) models via P25 mode. They did state ASN was not supported (period). So you need to keep that 3011DX/3000/3000+/4000 handy for those tasks.

I think they don't want to publicly say the device will work on Astro25 product line. If it doesn't they will feel on the hook. My guess is it won't be an issue because in theory it's based on a standard that Motorola did not deviate from. The device is nice though - I did get to play with one for a bit.

Do not get a KVL4000 you will be very unhappy with it. With the advent of the GTS HKVL30-ADP XTS battery adapter for the KVL3000 my department has been happy.

The KVL5000 is a good piece and is close to release, per my contacts. and the beta unit that was demonstrated a few months ago key loaded a 5000 and all APX devices I could throw at it. It still used the standard keyloading cables and still had a DB9 for KMF store and forwards. it will be more like the 3000+ and a far cry from the Windows POS that the 4000 is.

+1 WAIT for the new device. Even if you have to get a used 3K for now.

5K blows away the sorry excuse of the 4000, it's been junk since release, and gotten no better. Ranks up there with a MOSTAR.

Fantastic unit, you'll be glad you waited.

And yes. It works fine with key fill on Astro25.

KVL5000 will keyload any ASTRO25 radio with no problems at all.

The documentation says ASTRO25 is not supported, but what they really mean is that the KVL5000 can't add algorithms or firmware to ASTRO25 radios via FlashPort.

It will keyload them just fine however, as it's all the one standardised P25 protocol as documented in TIA.102-AACA and -AACD.
