Radios in wildland firefighting

Post by Cam »

I know the BK is big, but I've been hearing about the Vertex V900 for the FS and that Motorola has replacing BKs other places. I don't see what Motorola would be used, maybe the JT1000 or HT1550?
Would love to hear everybodys thoughs and opservations.

Thanks,

Cam

The VX800 is available with field programmability as well as cloning. Motorola has tried in the past with the JT1000 but was not that successful. The HT1550 is a possibility with the EDIT MODE option, but is lacking the AA alkaline battery option need. Where Motorola is VERY successful is the Federal shift to P25.

BK radios have the ability to easily change the PL tone from the keypad. A feature very necessary for firefighters.

Should give you a nice comparison.... List accepted and short comings as determined by them for radios used in service.

I was working with the County of San Benardino at the Glen Helen fire camp last week and saw mostly all BK radios for the Forest Service troups. I was too busy with County EOC comms to ge t more info. Lots of different agencies there, hundreds of fire trucks.

I would love to play with the new BK DPH portable. How much keypad programmability do you have in P25 mode?

I could be wrong but I thought they removed the front panel programmability option in the new DPH.

No it is still there I think as I have the programing manual for it.

It can be programed for most parameters like Nac codes, receive and transmit modes (analog, mixed mode, and digitial), and all of the usual thing they can be programed for.

I found it on the FCC OET page for the radio

It looks real cool to. Now what I'm wondering is if it can be made to cover the ham band like my EPH.

148-147 MHz are the written specs. But thats what I am talking about.

Hay! Here is an Idea...If every Batlab member gives a dollar, Batlabs could purchase a unit and do a timeshare type time. That would equal what... 2 minutes per user per year? LOL

BK

Hello.

The APCO 25 BK is listed as 146MHz to 174MHz.
It can go down to 143MHz with a little kick in the RSS.
The only models I have seen can all do user reprogramming.
"Big, bulky, but rugged as hell" was what one of the users have said about this radio.
