Help: PAC-RT will TX but X9000 Will not...

Post by /\/\oto /\/\edic »

I have a PAC-RT that is hooked to my X9000 radio. When the x9000 receives a signal it is transmitted through the PAC to my portable. However, when I transmit through the portable, the x9000 does not transmit.

I tried different portables...
I made sure I had the right PL...
I tried the PAC on numerous radios of different bands...

Only thing I can figure is either the PAC is bad or my wires on the switch are not correct.

Coming off the PAC is a cable with 6 wires inside. This was supposed to go to a MTVA or Convertacom I believe? Anyhow, I have been told that all I need to do is connect the Red and Brown wire and put positive to the yellow and it should work. Can anyone verify this? The other wires are Black, Green and Blue.

Is there anything that needs to be programmed into the X9000 to allow the PAC to work?

What radios do you own?: WAY too many!!!

pacrt

This reply is off the top of my head, but, that cable with 6 wires or so should go to a switch box, or the port on a convertacom such as for a mt1000. To make it go, there is 1 wire that should be switched to ground i believe. I dont remember which one, but that is all it needs. One of those is a ground, the other is the switch wire. There most likely is also a indicator lamp circuit there also.
If at first you don't succeed, use a bigger fuse...

Has this ever worked?

Okay you have things mostly good by having the PAC-RT transmitting to the portable. BUT, in order to make the mobile transmit, you need to ground the PTT line from the radio.

On my installation, and mind you, I have one VHF PAC-RT being shared between two X9000's, I found that I had to put a jumper in the PAC-RT cable to provide a ground to the PTT.

What happens is, the PTT is run through a relay and the low side of that relay needs a ground to complete the circuit. Just because you connect the PTT line to the PAC-RT doesn't mean it is gonna do anything with it.

This relay configuration is to allow positive keying radios to work with the PAC-RT. Such pieces of garbage like RCA super Car Phones and other things that should never have been built are examples.

To test this, stick your voltmeter across the radio PTT line and key your portable. See if the voltage goes to zero. If not, try grounding it yourself and see if the radio transmits. If so, that part is good. Next thing to do is check the PL decoder on the PAC-RT and ensure you have the right reed in the decoder section. Maybe your portable is programmed wrong.

Can you hear the relay pull when you transmit with your portable? You should be able to, even with it being a small reed relay.

Now check for the strap to ensure you are giving the PTT a hard ground.

Also, when you have the X9000 transmitting, try talking from your portable and see if the audio comes through.

Good luck!

Do not forget that mechanical PL reeds can wear out and go off frequency when they get old. If George's troubleshooting suggestions do not work, you should check the PAC-RT Rx PL reed circuit to see if it is detecting your portable Tx PL correctly.

The 6 wire connector pin out is on this link, but I do not remember how it is supposed to be hooked up (i.e. what wire goes to what).

The "port in/out" was supposed to detect when the portable radio was in or out of the convert-a-com charger pocket. Sorry, I do not remember what part the "PAC on/off" played (i.e. is it grounded, does it get B+, does it connect to the "port in/out" wire, etc.????). Maybe someone else can fill in the blanks.
