Re: Out-of-Band Modification Help for CDM-1550LS & CPS R

Post by W2GLD »

Hello all, I am looking for some assistance with an "Out-of-Band" modification for my CDM-1550 LS + UHF mobiles. I have two of these radios and the majority of my transmitting time is within the specified range of the factory radio however when I travel into New York City I would like to be able to hear the police and fire agencies which are in the 470MHz. range. The radios I have are low split so they only go up to 470MHz. I need to get them to go up to at least 480MHz for receive only. Does anyone know of such a modification? I am currently programming these radios with CPS Version: R06.04.00 Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you could please e-mail directly at: N3RPW@arrl.net Thanks in advance...

No one here has figured this out yet. You can join the long line of people wanting the same thing though. I have a 450-512 and wish I had 403-470 to use it on ham radio too.

Thanks for the update. You would think that as long as these radios have been on the market that something would surface soon. Hopefully very soon... Thanks for the info.

your poor CDM would go bezerk. instead of hemmin and hawin about it, go purchase a small handheld scanner, that way you can use it out of the car as well as in it...then you can easily nuisance edit a channel, or search for what ever you want...w/o CPS and a laptop. That CDM would probably to committ hara-kari for all the radio action in the NYC area...especially on any one of the NYC freqs

While I appreciate you comment about purchasing a scanner there is no need to be rude in the comments regarding the CDM radios. They are fine radios for what I need and as for buying a scanner, it would be nice to have something in my truck that's one piece without having all the "wacker's" clutter of radios and antennas. Being that I have all the NYPD/FDNY frequencies I need, search mode on a scanner is usless to me anyway and the receiver boards on almost all scanners are crap anyhow. So in the future unless you can make comments without your personal opinions toward's ones products, please don't!

Problem is, he's right. Most radios will go out-of-band to a certain extent. However, my understanding about the NYPD freqs is that some of them go beyond 480mhz. That CDM (assuming you could get the CPS to allow the frequency) would never go that high. The VCO would unlock and you wouldn't here anything. For all practical purposes, it would go 'berzerk'.

You are correct, the CDM is a good radio - for what it does. I used to have 2 of them. As long as you understand the limitations, you'll be fine. Those radios are also not the best as far as intermod goes. When I used to go in to Chicago with mine, it would go "nuts" with the RF energy flying around.

I would second thebigphish's opinion, use a scanner to monitor the NYPD and keep your CDM for the stuff you need to TX on.

To monitor the NYPD, you need a 'T' band radio, or a scanner.

You really need a high split UHF radio to cover the upper end of T-BAND.

NY and LA are the worst since they both use many freqs above 480 and 490
