Motorola Keypad Programable Radio?

Post by JJG »

Hiya.

Just wondering if Motorola makes a VHF radio that can be programmed through the radio's keypad?

Thanks,

You forgot the AP50/CP50...

Rare, but you see the odd one on eBay now and then.

Not to sound like an ass but GP68 and rugged should never be used in the same sentence. If you want a rugged FPP radio get a JT1000.

I don't think you'll find any JT1000's on ebay anymore because I think they block the sale of non type accepted radios like the JT1000, GP2000, GP68 etc. Correct me if I'm wrong.

You're wrong. The JT1000 is type-accepted for US operation. Once upon a time, it was used extensively by various US Government departments --- hence the "Government" mode that allows direct keypad entry without the use of the side key.

Not to confuse things, but a condition of the JT1000 type acceptance is that it not be usable as a radio and front panel programmable at the same time. See 47 C.F.R. sec. 90.203(g).

Oops.... now see what we did.... :)

Thanks for the info, and to add my pesos...

The JT requires a "programming key" that most of us understand, (what it is, etc.) and I think the loophole is the word "easily" or something to that effect.... the user has to take specific and deliberate steps to make the radio program via keypad. i.e. Open the Relm, flip the switch or open the Vertex, cut the wire/trace/etc, and yes, seek out a programming key for the JT in order to make it keypad program, and purposefully attach it.
(or just hakkaplug!) :D

Unfortunately, the law (like anything else), is as oh so finicky as the reader that interprets it!

OK, here we go again..........

I have a RACAL25 sitting here in front of me. All I have to do is push one button and I'm able to fully program the radio.
The radio has FCC and Canadian type acceptance stickers on the back. You can buy them right off the website.

Why is this such an issue?

I'm surprised a certain special someone hasn't mentioned the infamous front-panel programmable Spectra.

I'm not familiar with that RACAL, but if you look up the type accesptance order, you may find restrictions (such as limited to aircraft, limited to federal, limited to firefighting under the wildfires program, or the like).

Anyone bought a THALES brand, I think ex RACAL, radio, they go for somethin like 1300.00 from direct. Locally made here, might get one, when the get accepted into the all mighty FCC. Wonder what moto it will interface with, maybe the replacement for the XTS and an all bander.

heheheheh

The one I'm referring to is the Thales25 (formerly RACAL25).

It has an FCC ID number on the back.

The features are FPP programming, Project25 digital, DES, DES-OFB, OTAR, Multikey, 256 channels, display editing from keypad, soft buttons, zone capable, submersible, ruggedized, etc....about everything except MDC and trunking.

They retail for $2500

From a technical view, the Thales25 is one heck of a radio. The Thales25 looks to be my next VHF portable if I can find someone to service it. I like the pricing transparency of Thales, but the real value (to me) in Motorola is the service/support network. The service and support, to me as an individual, is an unknown with Thales wheras the local Motorola dealer/service shop is five miles away.
