New Scanner

Hi all

I would like to buy a scanner that picks up the type IIi 800 police band and most other uhf and vhf freqs. Any ideas!!!

If you have $$$, go with the Pro-96 - Motorola type I/II and EDCAS Trunking, oh did I mention it follows P25 9600 baud control channel too?

If not, go with a cheaper one, like the Pro-95, which is the one I have, it's a great scanner that also scans /\/\ Type I/II and EDCAS. Obviously the VHF-lo, VHF and UHF are covered (less TV and military band).

I didn't own any Uniden scanners before, but I'm sure someone would help you out

You shouldn't, because they don't.
I guess that's not true, they will scan it, but you want to able to understand what is being said.

Any "trunk tracker" scanner should do at least Motorola type II.

I use a Uniden BC245xlt and like it pretty well.

When are they (scanner manufs) going to make an affordable scanner with a reasonable audio output? When, for example, in the car or other noisy enviroment, I always have to turn it to max and its never enough.

patch it to the car stereo. That will make it have plenty audio.
It will sound horrible any which way.

Thats one of the nice things about Motos with the 5
pole filters and narrow bandsplits. They sound excellent
when amped up through the system. Scanners do not.

The new 796D upgrade does decode and track C4FM and CQPSK now according to the post that I have been following on Yahoo BC796D group. Go to the above link and check some of the posts, also if you don't need digital I'd search for an older BC895 as they are pretty cheap nowadays.

There is no enctryption anything anywhere in any of these scanners. A control channel is not an enctryption channel.

I'm not sure about which feature you are debating.

The Pro-96 will not decode encryption. No scanner will decode digital encryption. It will scan it but all you'll hear is garbled audio.

It will scan a trunking system with a 9600 baud control channel.

It will not scan the mil air band.

I personally like the way the Uniden scanners work and am a little more biased towards them.

As for audio in a vehicle, I'm running a BC785D with an external speaker. Audio is quite loud and it sounds much better then the internal speaker.

By most reports the R/S Pro-96 (made by GRE) has much better audio than the Uniden receivers. And word is that a mobile version of the Pro-96 is in the works.

It will also do Mil air if you use the correct software.

Uniden's are OK, I've got a BC60XLT and a BC80XLT. Both are handheld units. The BC60 will scan UHF/VHF hi/lo, and the BC80 does the same but also covers the 800-866MHz band. They're OK but I hate the rubber duck antennas they come with. Both of mine broke off so I bought new VHF ones from Motorola.

I like my pro-96. They just came out with a firmware upgrade so it can now decode CQPSK and C4FM. You can have virtual "pages" stored in memory that are 500 channels each i think like 10 of em. Its kinda like loading a new 500 channel codeplug with a whole new county or state system in there.
Its pre-loaded with most states too. These pages can be edited/updated as well. There is no Audio Value adjusting, it has a built in DSP and automatically optimizes the digital audio. Lots of other things..and with 4 1800 mah Nimh batteries in it, it last quite a while.
