Hi:
Lab ( or Labware ) is a term used by
mfg's for " Inhouse " Software that is
not distributed to anyome other than
Factory personnel for production and
research. In other words its Company Property, and if you obtain / use such SW, you could be headed for real problems unless
you own the company or have permission to the
Software.
Mfg's like Motorola take this very serious
and have made several attempts to prevent it
use by a user.
Most labware goes far beyond what the
User Software limits are, and miss-use
could / Does have the capability to
render the radio / product useless.
So, if you desire to keep your radio
safe and secure, just use the User Software
and you ( and your customer ) will be A_OK
Hope that helps

Hello.
one example of lab software is what is used on cellular telephones, some nitwit got hold of the Moto' lab RSS a few years ago, this allowed people to clone cellphones' the net effect, loss of millions to the companys and those of us who simply copied our own numbers for the sake of having lots o' fones' same number are very careful, to say the least.

I have heard that Motorola tolerates the use of lab software because it results in them making a pretty penny in repair charges resulting from the improper use of that software.
In short, they're laughing at everyone who ever blew up a radio with lab.
I think they purposely leak lab software out in order to determine the technical abilities of the hacker community and also drum up business for the repair side of the company.
Of course, the people inside Motorola who leak this software to the radio hacker community are probably people who go out fishing, catch a decent sized fish, nail it to a grey painted plywood board, and toss it back into the water and wait for pelicans to go for the fish. Sick people, but admittedly it is somewhat amusing if you think like that.
