sp50 serial bus questions

Post by truckie292 »

Well you all helped me once before, hopefully again.........
Motorola SP50 factory rib, and programming cup. Keep getting serial bus error when attempting to program the units. I know the computer and port setup are correct, since it worked on the HT1000's I was having problems with. Any help appreciated again.

What radios do you own?: I can't enter that much....

Well, to beat a dead horse a little more, what OS are you using on the computer? A "DOS window" in Windows or "reboot to MS DOS mode" in Windows don't cut it! True DOS ONLY!!! Also, check that the programming contact on the side of the radio is clean, ditto for the data terminal in the programming stand.

Exiting to dos might not help. Try botting completley in DOS mode, by pressing F8 on startup and starting to command prompt.

Hope this helps.

Be aware that even though it works with the HT1000 that it may not be corect com port setting for the SP50 rss program.

Its entirely possible for you to have the HT1000 program set to the corect com port but you may be set to the wrong com port in the SP50 rss program.

When you go into your SP50 program check your computer setting in it and make sure its the same com port as your HT1000 program is set for.

Its in each and every rss program you need to set the corect com port =not just a paticular program such as the HT1000 so check the SP50 setting too.

Hello:

As one of the resident persons who has programed
a number of radios, these are some of the pitfalls for
some persons:

1. We "Only" Recommend DOS 6.00 ~ 6.22
The use of any operating sysetm under Windows, or
a emulation is at your own risk, and these set ups
are better left to the seasoned Tech.

2. Low Rib Box Battery ( and a Factory Rib is recommended )

3. Use of a external Rib Power Supply a must !

4. Since you have a Factory Rib Fixture ( I Hope ) wll
will assume everything is OK there.

5. Also, as mentioned, the COM settings MUST be the Same
and if your HT1000 was on COM 1 its possible that your SP50
RSS is on Com2

6. Will wil assume you have Facotry RSS to eliminate Older
RSS or Corrupted RSS which I have seen from time to time.

7. Make sure your Radio Battery is Fresh.

8. AND, there is a Possibility the Rib Box is defective....Measure
the " Stand by " current and see if it hangs around 6 ~ 7 Ma.

I have startd to see a increase in Rib Box Failures due to
shorts in some of these cables comming form China, and
they are becomming a real problem issue.

========================================
Although rare, I have seen some Techs " Cut " the Program
Data Line ( Inside ) a customers radio to make it very hard
for another tech to change it.

Other than perhaps a Radio Failure ( which is possible too ) that
covers the major percentage of problems..

If the SP50 battery cover is not fitting flat on both sides, the programming contact will not touch in the programming stand.

sp50 problems

Post by truckie292 »

Thanks Guys,
l found a contact in the programming cup not making contact correctly, a dab of solder to extend it out a little bit made all the difference in the world.

Also, has anyone experienced a problem with RSS for either HT1000's or SP50's corrupting the Windows OS of their computer? Running an old 486 with Win98, and something keeps placing it in MS-DOS mode now. Had to format the drive and reinstall everything. Wondering if anyone else having same problem before.

No such problem here, but you are lucky that your OS didn't corrupt your radios. Sorry to be rude about it, but it has been covered so many times here:DOS ONLY FOR PROGRAMMING OLDER RADIOS WITH DOS-BASED RSS!!!! Keep using that "exit to DOS", "Reboot in MS-DOS mode", and "DOS emulation for games", and you will find out that it ain't no game when you brick a radio, and it don't always have "extra lives"!
