Has anyone seen, used or heared of a Combiner. It was a devise that was used at a local air show.
What we did was programm all the freqs in that we used plus we entered in the nextel direct connect number into it. If a fire cheif had a nextel and wanted to talk on say Statewide Fireground. We could click and drag the cheifs nextel Icon over to a box and boom. They were connected. (So I am told be the event cordinator.) I was unable to use this because one at the time we did not know it could be used on ham radio freqs and two I did not bring a nextel.
Anyone now where I can get more info on it. I do understand our county has gotten three and I hear the price rangs in around $20,000

Good stuff. LA County, California has four JPS units "strategically" placed with in the county to insure redundancy and rapid response when needed.

For some depts. that cannot afford a $20,000 unit, a simple 4 maxtrac/radius/ kenwood/EFJ/ yeasu/ nextel/ astro spectra/ radio with a small controller will suffice.
This however, may be the answer to some smaller depts. in where their townspeople opted not to elect a big surcharge in their phone bill to accomodate the extra funds to help pay for a massive Astro system.
Why fix something that's not broke? And when the BIG ONE HITS, time is of the essence, and what dept. will saccrifice an extra LEO/ Public safety personnel to sit at a laptop/PC and "drag and click" who talks to who.
Push the button on a simple controller as your heading out the door while getting your PPE on!!!!!!!!!
At least everyone will be on the same page during the crisis.

Heath, in your post you mentioned you did not know it but amateur
radio could be combined in. Just remember if it was, then a non ham
on another freq could initiate a transmission on a linked ham freq.
This is not a good scenerio unless the s*** had really hit the fan
and it was an absolutely necessary connection. The operator of the
patch system to really be proper would have to be licensed as a
ham operator so his control over the ham channel was legal.
All of the interconnectivity is great but sometimes we need to really
look at the grey areas that it can cause.
Also I am not sure you are picking up on what this unit does.
It alone cannot just "program in a freq or a number and talk on it.
These systems simply link EXISTING radio bases and repeaters
together that are already working standalone. It is not an instant
"walk in, set it down and it plays" deal. It has to be all preplanned
and connected with all possible cross connections in mind.
Just a poor mans version of what a /\/\ Gold elete console can do.

Combiner and ham radio
It was talked about by our ARES Staff member and he said we could us it if only a ham radio operator was controlling something like that. The chances of us using this is next to zero. That was a staff chosie to let us use it if need be and I agree its a liability all around...
But I thought that it was cool that something like this existed.
