Minitor II Question

Post by KC8NIY »

Thanks to a previous post by TPG, I know that Min II's come in the following VHF High sub-bands:

132.00-139.99
140.00-147.99
148.00-159.99
160.00-174.00

How do you determine which RF board the pager is using? I'll probably be needing 140-147 split and can't utilize anything else for the application. There's a ton of them on the used market, but I'm sure most or all are the common 148-160 split. I can't afford to buy the wrong ones.

If memory serves you can take apart the pager and the model number of the board should tell you what the bandsplit is by calling big /\/\.

I am unsure about the keynotes but I am willing to say since they were crystal controlled anything is possible.

Yes the label on the bottom tells you what the pager was crystalled as from the factory but I would not always trust that. Our pagers still say 155.745 and that was three freqs and paging systems ago.

Well, the Minitor I and II pagers are also crystal controlled, but they are limited to the split they were designed for. If you go more than a meg. one way or the other over the specs, you wind up with degraded sensativity as well as the possibility that the pager won't work at all with certain systems.

Regarding the split determination, your best bet, as has been described, is to open the pager and get the model number from the board and call motorola. Just so you are aware, there are 2 boards in the pager. The smaller board is the one which is located near the bottom and holds the crystal(s) for the unit. You would want the numbers from the RF baord (the larger of the 2). Going by the unit ID sticker is a bad idea for so many reasons. As mentioned, the freq could be changed, but you may have a high band pager and the case could be from an old low band parts pager. You would definately have a hell of a time aligning the damn thing if you were to put a LB crystal in it!

Motorola can be reached at (800)422-4210 and they can give you all neccesary information regarding the model. I will pull a service manual if I get a chance today and see if there is some model breakdown in it.

Thanks for the help guys. Chuck, if you do happen to get any specific model information from the service manual, that would be great!

Take the pager out of housing and look at the number on the rf board should have 3 letters and 4 numbers I think, That is how to tell the band split for sure.
