Just ordered one! $135 w/shipping. there is some sort of shipping disclaimer for heavy items but it still put the order through.

I'm a little confused. Are all those yellow tops the same with the exception of physical size?

Also, the Red Tops seem to have the same specs. What is the difference supposed to be?

Me: "What exactly is a 900Mhz UHF CB?"
Them: "A very nice CB at 900Mhz speed!"

It looks like the red top battery is billed as a heavier duty started battery and the yellow top battery is billed as more of a deep-cycle battery. The charts on the red-top page on their website indicate hugher and longer-sustained CCA than the yellow top or traditional batteries. The Blue top batteries are billed for marine use.

Red - Vehicle starting (that's what I run as the primary battery in my Expedition)

Yellow - Deep cycle (an excellent choice for running equipment, although using standard SLA-type batteries may be more cost effective)

Blue - Marine

Hmm, after looking at the web site, apparently you can. They've made some changes to their lineup (for instance, with case color making a difference).. in the past, the color of the top was all that mattered...

I know one is supposed to be starting an one deep-cycle. But the CCA on both are the same.... 750cca. And the Reserve capacity is not listed for either. They don't tell you jack on that website but they expect you to buy it?

I'll put it this way. I'm running a Red Top in my Expedition. It's about 3 years old, and has been put through quite a bit (including the wonderful Texas summers). The automotive wiring goes to the top posts and my wiring goes to the front posts (1/0ga. to the power distribution panel).

It cranks the truck perfectly and has no trouble running the accessories for ~3hrs. without affecting cranking. I've measured standby current on the accessories around 15A (two consoles of radio gear, plus the LEDs... the strobes don't run unless the engine is running for obvious reasons).

I've sold quite a few friends on the red-top Optimas, and no one has been disappointed so far. Besides the non-spillable qualities, the dual posts for easy wiring, etc., the lack of corrosion is a wonderful thing.

When this one dies, I'll be buying another Red Top.

Oh, and I am a volunteer, so the truck doesn't exactly get babied. I've run the Optima down more than a few times (leaving the accessories on overnight, usually... d'oh!) and it's still performing perfectly.

Since Optima doesn't pay me directly, you can forward my commission to...
