jeep cherokee install pics

Post by racemedic »

Does anyone have any install pics of jeep cherokee's? I have a 2M/440 radio with remote head and a scanner installed now, but I'm out of room to mount more equipment without having radios all over the place, I would like to keep it as clean as possible.

Thanks
Bob

Very, very tough to do a good install on a Cherokee. The best I've seen use a tall mount with the base on the passenger floor but, that doesn't leave much room for the passenger.

You're way ahead of the game with remote mount stuff but it's a tough install.

If you find a better way post a pic. There are a lot of public safety organizations going with the Cherokees and I've never seen a truly complex install on one that allowed for anything close to normal room for the passenger.

The "square-okee" mid size Jeep is the toughest to do an installation in. No room to run cables, no room for equipment or anything. I just did an install on one with hideaway strobes, pushbar strobes, rear hatch strobes, lightbar, M1225, scanner, external power amp, siren/lighting controller. A passenger can still ride in it, but it is a little tight! PA and strobe supply are under the back seat. It took a lot of time to do it neatly. If you'de like pics, email me at turboblown@aol.com
I'd post them here, but some AOL conflict is keeping that from happeing. If anyone would like to post the pics, I'll send them to you.

I'd be interested too. I own a 93 Laredo, and am stumped as well. I have a Syntor X 9000. Radio behind the spare tire, siren under the back seat, head below the glove box. Allows for a fair amount of room for the passenger. It's a challenge. I'd post pics, but I haven't set up my scanner with the new computer yet.

I'm getting ready to do a multi-radio install in my 89 jeep comanche pickup.

I'm going to be putting in a loband x9000 (currently sitting on the passanger floorboard), 2-3 spectras, scanner, jedi mva, wildcard DEK, etc..

I'm mounting 3/4" plywood behind the seat for the radios, power distro, DEK relays, etc, and i'm
building a custom console that will mount to the right of the hump (i have a stickshift in the way)

I'll have pics of the last Squarokee install on my site soon.

If your radios have remote heads, just get a gooseneck used to mount the handset on a 3w cellphone and mount the heads on them. Bolt it up to the right side of the tranny hump and flex them over toward the driver.

Mount the "suitcase" in the rear cargo area and on the side. Have fun routing the cables!!! 1" split loom is helpful along the rocker/seat area, as you can't get any wiring under the rocker trim.
Properly wrapped, all wiring on the XJ Cherokees can be run under the mat/carpet right down along side the driveshaft tunnel without problem. Just watch when you bolt the seat back down so you don't pinch your harness.

Strobe, wigwag, backflasher, RF amps can all go under the rear seat. There's plenty of room. A Maxtrac or CDM with a remote kit can also be mounted here. Keyword for this installation: MUFFIN FAN!

Properly done, this can be one of the most rewarding installs for one to do. Most places won't even attempt it. If they do, it looks like a 15 year old vo-tech student did it. Take your time and think it out and it will be a very neat and impressive installation. You may even get other local departments interested in your shop once they see it.

i had the pleasure of doing an install in one of the wonderful vehicles...(mine) 89 jeep beater..installed 3 maxtracs..VHF, UHF, and low band. i have a manual transmission and of course you have the e-brake between the seats. also have a passenger in the vehicle often so anything in that area is off limits. only thing i came up with was to use a pivoting post, mounted behind the e-brake on the hump, and faced all the radios forward. yes it is a pain to look down and back when changing channels but what else are ya giong to do. made a hole in the wall under the rear seat and thats where i mounted the fuse panel and such. if anyone wants pics e-mail me @ thgiz@yahoo.com
