Probably you ARE hearing illegal companies and truckers.
They seem to have a mentality sometimes that says " I am not
near water so no marine activity to bother if I want to talk there."
There is a lot of outward similarity to a gp 300, but
the radio inside is much different. In otherwords it is not
just a 300 with a display and fixed programming. Phrawg

YEah the companies are legal but are the comms their using legal? You'd need to get a hold of their frequncey license and a frequncy counter an TX on the radio to check if it's been re-programmed. Also re-programming i don't think is possiable cause it's not just Gp300 or GP88 software, to re-program it's problary factory fit. Motorola Tritons are pretty much useless these days cause they are no long accreated for Marine use.

mmm I wouldn't trash it, if it's in good condition sell it on Ebay cause some people may have some use for it. Or just say it's for free and some one has to pay postage.

Motorola Disconnected these radios along time ago, and cause due to their age, they are no longer up to Marine Standards. I'm not sure with the story in the US but here in Aust. a friend had one and was told that his equipment was out dated.

I can't speak with authority re use in other countries, but they are type accepted for use in the US with a FCC ID of ABZ99FT3010.

There's a gang charger with 5 of them next to me. Use them every day in the summer for marine use (small boat work).

Sounds like checking it on a frequency counter would be the 1st step.
I've got one here also as all the accessories including batteries are compatible with my GP300's. Nothing 'outdated' about these, they're better made than most of the new stuff at the Marine store.
