XTS 5000R Model II VHF "KEY FAIL"
I have an XTS 5000 R model II VHF that displays the words KEY FAULT after the radio is turned on. The radio operates ok but the Key fault flashes on and off while the radio is on. Does any one have any input or Help on this? The motorola dealer's programming guy seems stumped.
Thanks in advance for any help!

PS I wish I would have seen this board before this radio was purchased... getting it programed was a whole other issue!

Sounds like the encryption key has been erased. If the motorola shop is stumped over this one, maybe it's time to find a new Motorola shop to go to.......
Seriously though, if the radio is secure equipped, and it has been keyloaded without "infinite Key retention" enabled, simply removing the battery will cause the key to be erased.
Possibly the radio is programmed for full time encryption and the radio is in some failsafe mode after loosing it's key?

If you have access to RSS, disable software encryption.

..
it's not KEY FAULT - it's KEY FAIL.
it's not SOFTWARE encryption - it's SECURE HARDWARE - which needs to be disabled in the codeplug.

My radio says "key fail" and I was told that this would fix it.

Unless you're also getting 'fail 09/10' in the display upon power up as well, then your radio does appear to have a secure module in it. Does your department use encryption, or was it ordered this way for 'future' enhancement?
If you're not using encryption right now, then there's no need to have it enabled in the programming. Disabling it will get rid of the 'key fail' message...which is just the radio telling you it's secure capable, but it doesn't currently have an encryption key loaded into it.
If you DO use encryption, then you need to load the radio with the proper encryption key before you can talk to others in your department on a secure channel/talkgroup.
I agree, if the Motorola tech is stumped on this one, you need a new tech.

You guys are GREAT!
I understand that our motorola guy isn't the most prepared, but he is doing it for free. seems He has a soft spot for some of us local Firefighters? They havn't delt with many 5000's yet as our county originaly purchased 3000's and even then both the city and the county have their own radio shops. I would love to deal with another dealer but our local dealer is the only dealer we are aloud to purchase equipment for the digital system from... a motorola thing I guess! It seems like many of the people here have far more experience with the astro systems/ radios than our local guys. Always great to deal with experience.
But any way Thank You So much for the help!

PS I will post here once we try the ideas!
