Feedback on the GP339 portable.

Post by aays888 »

Hi group,
I am a new member, my name is Anthony and I am from Sydney. I just purchased a new GP339 portable which I love, but I have heard of a few people saying they do not like the new radio. I know for the die hard Saber user I can understand, but for the general, why?
I think alot of people maybe expect to much from this small Ham sized portable, like speaker audio which I can undestand. But the sensitivity and selectivity is excellent, the build is well typical Motorola and for a radio of it's size and looks, I think you can not go wrong. This is my first Motorola radio and I am now going to find it hard to own another brand.

Cheers
Anthony.

A major gripe with the entire Waris series, to which the GP339 belongs, is that they can't be taken out of band. Most other radios have some leeway of a couple of megs.

The european waris (AE) work just fine out of band, it is no problem with a hex editor to tweak the CPS. The UHF 403-470 radio covers appr. 375-500 without too much loss at the ends, and the VHF 136-174 bandsplit does about 125-190. These ranges are the result of three tweaked UHF (GP388 and GP1280) and one VHF (GP388).

Here in germany all the display waris radios offer 255ch, also the older MT2100 (the MTS2000-equivalent) had 250 channels.

But nothing beats the XTS5k, with 512 channels :-)

Here in Australia the GP339 has grouped-255 channels, stun feature, voting, select 5 selcall, status call, enc/dec DTMF, VOX, options for a recorder, SmarTrunk™, scrambler... and all that the HT1250 has except for the, limited MDC1200 and Quick Call II.
I believe the GP338 is the same as the HT1250, but I do not think the is a European model GP339.
I love this radio, OK it is not a Jedi series, but I did not expect it to be. Remember as radios or even cars get newer, there is going to be more plastic and things are going to get smaller with more features.
I am off to the States soon, and I am going to purchase a new XTS3000III because I need a digital/analoge portable, and even when I have the XTS I will still keep the GP339 because it is a good small sized radio. PERIOD.
It also has a option for SmarTrunk™, what ever that is. Maybe it is some mode of trunking?
