What radios do you own?: XTS2500, XTS5000, and MTS2000

The best way to RECEIVE ONLY is to get a SCANNER.
If you aren't authorized to be on a trunking system you have no business with a trunking radio with someone else's sytem programmed into it.
It has been discussed many times before on this board: having trunking radios programmed without proper authorization (even just "to listen") violates intellectual property rules and is considered a computer access crime. There have been many documented cases recently of persons arrested and charged with having trunking radios programmed without authorization.

It isn't worth it. If you want to listen, go buy a trunking scanner.

If you want a trunking radio programmed, contact the system manager and request written permission. If you have a legit reason to be on the system, they will arrange for programming.

End of discussion.

THE STX 821 IS A GREAT RADIO.FAR BETTER THAN ANY SCANNER OUT THERE.JUST PROGRAM IT,AND DON'T TRANSMIT ON IT.DON'T DISABLE ANYTHING.YOU MIGHT WANT TO SELL IT!

If you take out the two screws from the bottom of the radio and remove the case you will see the press to talk switch on the side of the radio. The little metal dome that makes up part of the switch is held on by scotch tape. Cut the tape around the dome and take out the dome.Dont loose it.You can put it back later.Paul

just a note, that method doesnt disable TX completely, especially in a trunking environment.

I would love too,but with out the system key its not going to happen,
I have the system ID's control channels. connect tones.talk groups every
thing you need except the system key what ever that is,so I think I will just listen to the conventional stuff right now and try and contact some system adminitrators and try to get permission to monitor their FIRE EMS
talk groups and see what happens.you never know until you try, however
these are great radio's.

for those of you who are looking a guy on ebay has plenty to sell with ant, batts, and chargers they work and are in great condition mine were a 9 out of 10 (all three)
