I tried two of theirs and neither worked. The OEM Kenwood worked, however.
After speaking with them today, it seems that it is an "almost" compatible and not reliable like the Polaris for Motorola.
I have a feeling that I get to bend over for the real one!

A Texas-based company called "Epcom" makes a very nice unit as I just discivered. I just got to use one of these units that belongs to a local Kenwood tech and it worked great. It's also built very nice and comes with computer cable, mobile cable and portable cable. I just ordered on. If you are a company, you get it for $117.00

I purchased one of these about 4 months ago and it's an all-in-one type unit. :D With this you don't need anything else (except a computer and the RSS software of course  ) and the price is not bad.

Check it out. He sells a lot of these on e-bay and there is one up for "auction" every few days.

The one on eBay isn't the Epcom unit. I've seen the one from Hong Kong- it's built into the DB25 housing and it does only portables.

The Epcom is in a cast aluminum box and has a built-in battery, 6-pin modular jack for mobiles, DIN jack for HTs and a DB25 to the laptop. It also has status light.

I just received my Epcom unit and it worked perfectly out of the box. It came with all cables, most software and AC adaptor.

I got the EpCom unit about five years ago. It seemed to work fine for a while then it got a little finicky. I guess I used it for about two years or so and then traded it with a radio. I talked to the guy that has it now and he says it it still working fine for him.

I don't know if it's still the same unit but, I didn't like having to take the cover off each time to plug and unplug the battery. I guess I could have put in a switch but never did....

More "other" mfr info....?

Post by Ray D. O'Mann #2 »

OK since we are discussing the "other" brands, how about the ICOM IC-F320? I recently acquired one and I haven't got a clue about what I need to buy/build to program it. It certainly wouldn't be worth it to buy an expensive programmer for just one radio, all the rest of my stuff is *M* :-?

I made my own TTL-RS232 converter out of a Maxim 234 IC and some caps and a 9 volt battery. It does all the Kenwood and yeasu lines.
