MOL says its a vocoder board but thats all. I would have to dig out the service manuals to tell what radio - I will when I get home later if some one hasnt come up with a better answer.

Here are the IC's on the VOCODER board:

U401~U403 ___32Kx8 DSP s-ram
U404_________256Kx8 FLASH ROM
U405_________DSP (digital signal processor)
U406_________ADSIC (ABACUS/DSP support IC)

It appears in the XTS3000 service pdf, includes schematic and PC board image.

... but what does it do...

The vocoder does all the audio processing (DSP, IMBE, etc.)

The controller is the human interface (channels, audio amp, volume, buttons, etc)
