Thats not actual photos from that satellite though right? It looks like the website generates an image of what the Earth *would* look like from where that satellite is at, but its not actually a live photo.

I find it funny that the entire state of Indiana is high resolution on Google Earth.

Why?

You can see aircraft on the tarmac at "Area-51". (if it existed, that is :) )

I get a chuckle out of the fact that looking at Area 51 with Google Earth you can zoom in to ~4000 ft and almost read the tail numbers off the aircraft but if you go look at Fort Drum, NY (A US Army Installation) the resolution isn't half that.

But the resolution for Watertown, NY 9 miles away is spectacular and you can see cars in driveways and even the occasional person walking down the street.

Why in the @&*! would Area 51 be crystal clear but have an installation that everyone knows about and that I frequent on a regular basis have it's resolution reduced?

Ah our government, go figure.

While it might be down-rezing at the hands of Google, it may simply be that higher-rez sources aren't available for that particular area, for whatever reason. If you zoom out and look at the whole US, you can see how Google "knits" multiple sources together... from as simple as a graphical representation of the terrain to aerial photos that get down to showing details on individual vehicles.
