There are several outfits that will take newer handsets for donations to organizations like victim assault groups that hand them out to those that can't afford cellphones for emergency alls to 911 in case they are attacked again by their EX boyfriends/husbands.
They don't take the 'car' type units as they are difficult to carry in purses or pockets for the above reason.
Women/sexual assault groups can make use of the 911 features all cellphones have, and this is why they ask for donations of your unused/wanted phones...so they can give them to people who need to contact emergency services.
Maybe even a use for organ transplant donors...the uses are many.
Pagers used to be the norm for notifying organ recipients that a donor has been located and the needed organ is on its way, and I would gladly give my unused pager for just such a use...battery included!

They have links to these organizations in both Canada and the U.S.
The site is Canadian in origin, just so you know in advance.
