What radios do you own?: one of each

Your preference in Modat

Post by nh7cy »

Yes, its another random topic. One which i havent seen yet, though im sure has come close to coming up.

Im just curious, as most of us are familiar with Modat, knowing that depending on what ID you pick, you can manipulate how your radio sounds on keyup, what are some of our board members favorite ID's?

It can range from an ID that would mimic closely those used by LAPD, to some of the rather alarming ones.. ie. 8978, etc..

I dunno.. Just a random topic i know, just thought i'd bring it up..

Personally i say anything that ends with a 6 or 7 works best..

A lot of 5-tone radios will do up to 20 digits or so - you can make 'em play Dixie :D

Is that possible on MODAT radios?

not possible because they only do up to 4 digits for the ID

When I was living in LA when they were still analong... you can just hear it out the window because CRASH UNIT was always doing traffic stop in front of me house.. thats what I get for living to gang infested area of Hollenbeck Division.

currently im trying to work on a modat encoder for use on a computer.

that way you can try out modat codes and listen to them on your computer without having to program and reprogram your radio a bazillion times to find the one you want.

so far modat looks like this..

the modat ID consists of 7 distinct tones. the first 3 tones are always the same no matter what digits you think. i cant tell you a specific frequency for each tone but i can tell you that it sounds something like 042 or something like that, followed by your 4 digit ID.

so far i've mapped out and recorded digits 0-9. basically what needs to be done, is to build a program that you can type in your 4 digit ID into, and have it replay that ID with the corrosponding tones, preceeded with the 3 precursory tones that seem to always be present on the ID.

just something to mess around with

Someone already beat you to it (but it costs $$$$). I was trying to make a similar program. Never got off the ground though.

yeah i saw that too..

if i get this done though, it will be freeware so everybody can use it

the next step would be to make a modat decoder, though barely anybody uses modat anymore, but it should be interesting
