Micom crystal HF radio squelch info...

Does anyone know if the squelch in the early Micom radios (the 10 channel A/B, models), is a true "voice-squelch" or just an AGC actuated squelch?

It sure gets tiresome listening to the noise on 40 meters all day.

The original (crystal controlled) Micoms utilyzed the "Voice Squelch" modules. The only thing I felt was that engineering should have used a slightly larger value Squelch potentiometer. Years later I incorporated one of these modules on an older Kenwood TS520 transceiver and it worked fairly well.

yes, these series had quite an effective voice pattern
recognition squelch system. I have owned several of them
in a desktop consolette configuration and that was one of their
best features. It would ignore 95% of a lightning storm
going on nearby but open on a voice pattern with no
hesitation at all. Phrawg
