I've been digging through the archive, and I don't think i've seen the answer to this specific question. Is it possible to retrofit a b3 or similar non-display model in the jedi series with a B5 front and then upgrade the radio with lab and the appropriate codeplug for the desired model, like mtx-8000 b3 -> mtx-8000 b5/mt-2000 or ht-1000 -> mt2000? I knowthe answer is probably out here somewhere, I just haven't found it yet. Many thanks, Will

(editing my original post)

The firmware for a B3 model can support ONLY a top display, and ONLY if its' not an AN revision unit. Hacking is required.

The firmware on a B3 can NOT support the front display no matter how much hacking you do.

The model number has to end with BN or greater in order for it to work.

Get this though, the B3 radios contain the same controller as the B5's and B7's....but the AN's definitely will not upgrade to display, but can be upgraded with lab for Smartnet.

Just to clarify, but you can make a B3 into a B4 with top display. With the lab software it is easy. Turning a B3 into a B5 or a B7 is a little harder. The difficulty is in the complexity of the lab software, as there are an abundance of fields to change. There is also the possibility of turning it into a brick. Knock on wood, mine remain functional.

Have fun

As you say, I have successfully upgraded several B3s to B4 (top display). I haven't attempted to upgrade a B3 to B5 or B7. Can you help with what fields need to be changed in the RSS/Lab?

I've done the B3 to B4 upgrade... However, I have heard from a few people that I might be able to get it to decode MDC in conventional modes to display, but haven't had anyone get back to me either with a code plug, or info on how to do it.

I have spent countless hours trying to fully change a b3 into a b5 or b7. In fact, even some of the features don't work with my new B4 that was a B3. I have a "real" UHF B4 and it has a rollover channel knob and allows me to put in as many modes in one zone as I want. The VHF B4 that I made from the B3, allows only 16 channels in the zone/channel assignment screen. Also, I received a blank codeplug from M for a VHF B4. Even though my model number says that it is a B4, I cannot program the codeplug into it. There really is a lot involved in changing any Jedi.

I doubt that you can get MDC decode with a B4 that used to be a B3, considering that my factory B4 won't do ANY signalling. It has every other feature, but that. Who knows though, maybe some one can shine light on our subject here.

I know how to do the "upgrade" to make it support MDC, I am just very very very shy about turning on more features that I don't understand. Granted, I have a spare MTX, but it has a codeplug too new for this application issue... I paid $25 for it at Dayton, so it wouldn't be a total loss I guess... but the one with the display i'd need to play with in the end...

Here's how I was told - verbatim from the person who sent it to me... If I knew their handle on the new board I would give them credit....

"After reading your codeplug, save it, then press ESC, F4, F2, F9, F3, F2 to get to the MDC options. Turn on what you want and then F10 your way back to
the main menu and press F3 then F8 to write to your radio. Pay no attention to the model number or create codeplug options as they were meant to create codeplugs from scratch (I think) but I know it works the way that I wrote above.

I remembered your name but couldn't remember why until you mentioned the B4, you can play with other options as well but stay away from anything that looks scary...and if you enable H-options, enable only one as the lowest enabled H-option displays in your codeplug information screen (H36 takes precedence over H38 but H38 is better, go figure)"

This required Depot V2.

Hope this helps...
