heh, I don't mean a codeplug out of the radio just something close to it along the lines of an already set up chann line up with freqs. I'd rather not spend 1-2 hrs putting everything in and changing all the NAC settings

You don't need the NAC unless you're going to transmit.

Some agencies use conventional systems that are digital like LAPD and they use a different NAC as a sort of "PL" so they can use the same frequency, but have different users.

So the whole, "You don't need a NAC unless you're going to transmit" thing is not true. Scanners do not selectively lockout unwanted NACs like they can PLs and DPLs, so you'd need a real radio to do that.

He can set that radio up to not transmit at all on LAPDs frequencies as they are not trunked, so the whole, "Buy a scanner" is old hat too.

I'm just pointing out that everyone jumps on the band-wagon and screams GET A SCANNER even though the person may not need a scanner.

The whole, "get a scanner" thing came about because people were trying to program radios on trunked radio systems and were jacking the systems up, i.e., radios were getting inhibited, legit radios were missing calls, illegal access attempts were being made, etc.

With a conventional system, you don't have those problems as you can program the radio to NEVER transmit - something that you can't truly do with a trunked radio, especially with the newer trunked protocols.

I think what everyone is missing is the fact that this guy is not programming anything on a trunked system. He is trying to monitor a CONVENTIONAL system.

Oh and not sure who you were referring to when you posted the "wanna be" comment, but it sure ain't me.

:o No I wasn't directing the wanna be comment towards you...It just seems these days people get into more trouble with programming radios to monitor and not transmit so they say.
Just for the money you spend on a Astro Saber...I am guessing thats what he or she has..He or She gotta be politically correct now..Could spend the money on a high end uniden or radio shack(GRE) and be a lot easier to program in the end...and possibly save him or her some heartache in the end. To me its like buying a race car and sitting in your driveway playing with the throttle and never race it..But I suppose if it really floats your boat...I just hope this person has a legitmate use hobby and not ulterior motives in mind....So I apologize if I ruffled any feathers.. .I just want to see people stay on the up and up side of the Law/Po Po...

I apologize too for coming off like I did, but you have to realize that even high-end scanners don't have a feature that can lockout or omit NACs from digital frequencies like Motorola radios can. I can either buy a $500.00 scanner, or a $500.00 Astro Saber. If my main interest is listening to a conventional digital system that unitlizes NACs as their PL/DPL, then that that $500.00 scanner is worthless as they do not have the ability to decode or lockout NACs. This leaves me listening in digital CSQ where I'll hear everything coming over that frequency. There may be neighboring agencies using the same frequency in which I don't want to hear, but with a scanner, I'm forced to hear everything coming over the speaker. With a Motorola radio, I can program my radio to only listen to a certain NAC, there by omitting interference from the neighboring agency.

Just to clarify for this thread and others who may be interested, LAPD does not use any trunking, runs all channels in the clear except a couple (metro ops, narco, anti-terrorism etc) and has a veritable f-ton of channels. 2 channels per division, times 19 divisions, plus 15 or so tac channels, 8 traffic channels, 5 or 6 mutual aid channels, and 12 other randoms as well (k9, air ops, juvi).

It's alot of work to build the plug, as noted by OP

As ESComm mentions
"It's alot of work to build the plug, as noted by OP".

This IS the price the radio user has to pay to have the same 'channel layout' as LAPD's Rovers.

Fair enough. Most agencies I know of use talkgroups for stuff like that (that being what they're there for), but I get what you're saying.

Ok since some of you are still stuck on the "Buy a scanner" kick.

I can go on and on about how a radio is better on RX then a scanner BLAH BLAH

but I won't so get over it. I have what I have, and that's not going to change because a few people on a message board told me to.

Now on to the wanna be comments. Think about this. Everything I need is posted on the web to properly program a radio with the freqs and how to make a radio Xmit. So If really wanted to I wouldn't need to come here.

I came here to see if anyone had already set up a RX only CP to match (not a true CP) what LAPD had as a line up. Well I guess that was a mistake.

Let me put it to you this way:

This board isn't the place to come for frequencies, dedicated system information, talkgroups, what have you. It has long been mentioned that if you send someone a codeplug, remove all the programming and stuff as it may reveal more information about your system that you may not want public or shared.

In other words -- use your head.

You've noticed in this thread that people's attitude is pretty much "get a scanner." This really has been the typical response because there are a lot of people who have come across the means to purchase, program, and gain access to system resources they otherwise wouldn't have access to. They may do this knowingly or unknowingly.

Throughout the past couple of years, it has been the interest of this community to point people in that direction if they are asking general questions. If you ask specifics or point out what specifically you are trying to do, people will be more helpful and be able to guide and help you understand.

In the end - I'm not saying this is your intention, or something that you would do. Don't take it that way. I'm simply trying to explain the thought process behind it.

In the end, if you want frequency information etc, there's enough other resources on the internet with far more updated information than you'll find here.

So in short, I'm going to lock this topic - since I would expect/believe that it wouldn't be something a general member would just share - even if they had it.
