MT/MTS QUESTIONS

Post by JOHN R »

I inquired as to the price of new mt2000 today at my local M dealer, was given a price of 1200.00 for the top mount display model, Does this sound right? (vhf) Also, what are the main feature differences between MT/MTS? can both support encryption?

The main difference is that one supports trunking (MTS2000), and the other doesn't (MT2000). Otherwise, they appear identical, although I haven't seen enough of the MT2000 to comment on whether or not they are FLASHport upgradeable (didn't think to take notice, although I'd bet money that they are). Perhaps someone else can enlighten us on that point.

Dammit, just checking my post again, and noticed you asked about encryption. Again, I'm not sure, but I believe the MT2000 is capable of SecureNet. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. Why do I bother to answer if I'm not sure...? Because I'm currently 3 sheets to the wind.

Some MT2000's have boards in them that are flashport upradable. You'll have to look at the model number on the controler and have Parts ID inform you as to what it is. Most will say MT2000/MTX838 controler. If that's the case - they have 256K of flash - but aren't flashport capable.

MT2000's support a different suite of MDC than MTS's. MTS's will do Call Alerts - Sel-Calls - PTTID Display, Radio Checks, maybe some other stuff. Oh - Status messaging too!. MT2000's will usually support PTTID, and will respond to Call-Alerts, Sel-Calls, Radio Checks. They will transmit a PTTID but will not decode it.

You can make a MT2000 think it's a MTS - but you'll loose some features in the process. If the controler is a genuine MTS one - you might be in business. Clone a good MTS codeplug in there and you could be golden. But be careful, you could have a brick faster than you think.

John R.

If you are interested in a gently used MTS2000 VHF with DES-XL let me know.

Very resonable deal possible.

Tks,
Jaqx
