Can a Motorola 202T Modem do amateur radio packet?

Post by 2wayguru »

I have a Motorola 202T wireline full duplex modem. This will do 2 wire or 4 wire. I was hoping to use it with my APRS. Does anyone know if it will do it? Here is a pic of it.

No,

it won't do eather - packet is the ax25 protocal and aprs is a different encodeing method.

if i remember right that modem was used for many years in analog vhf/uhf paging transmitters (it's the one with the rotary selector switch on the front, right?).

it uses the bell 202 standard up to 2400 bps - i think some were 1200 some were 2400 and others were 4800 total useing 2400 up on 1 pair (2 of the 4 phone line wires) and 2400 down on the other pair.

some telematry like the dovesats and other sats/land based comms still use the 202 standard so the modem could be used to decode those text transmissions and of course analog paging transmissions.

but why would one want to use a stand alone modem for that when your basic sound card in your 'puter can decode almost everything with the right software, unless you are gonna set up a detacated monitoring rig for 202 only.
