odd mts2000 problem

Got an odd problem here with my mts2000 uhf 450-512 type III. When I turn it on, it just stays in self test mode.....eternally. UNLESS, I press some buttons, almost like slapping somebody who is sleeping to get him up! So what is the deal here?

Any button, or one paticular one? Have you checked to see if any buttons are sticking or have something in it? I know that certain radio will do what you describe. Personally, I would open up the radio and carefully clean the keypad and contacts..

Actually, I just refurbished everything, nothing is stuck, good thought though.

Check the flex connection going from the front display to the controller. Also, make sure the flex hasn't popped loose from the solder pads on the actual display board. I think it is fair to say the weakes part of a Jedi are those flimsy display boards and the way they mount and connect to the radio. You gotta be extra careful when popping them apart. Static electricity can also make the display board CPU erratic- be sure to be properly grounded when opening or handling them. Don't wear wool clothing, etc.

Another thing comes to mind: did you reprogram the radio and assign a duplicate function (say, scan programming or call response) to more than one key? Did that with an MTS2000 and it would "lock up" during self-test and after you hit the keys or moved the zone switch a few times it would "wake up".

That is correct, duplicating a function between menu and switch is the most common cause of a self-check hang without error code. Read the radio, which you should be able to do while it hangs in self-check and check your programming, I'll bet you find a duplication.

Turns out, I had programmed the emergency button for the zone select feature, and that was the problem. I didn't have it programmed twice, but I guess the radio doesn't want that button to do that function. Well, I reprrgrammed it for emergency, works fine now.
