Greetings,
I recently bought a working used XTL5000 that was originally an XTL1500. It's a mid-power dash mount with an O5 head. It worked when I got it last week, I programmed it with two channels, talked on it once to test it, and all was fine. I left for an hour and when I got back it was off and won't power up. No lights or activity on the control head and no noise from the speaker.
Here is what I have done so far:
* Checked the Astron power supply. It works fine with other radios.
* Checked the fuses in the main power cable and accessory cable. All are good.
* Checked the voltage on the radio end of the main power cable and accessory cable: 13.68 volts
* Swapped with a spare O5 control head. No change.
* Tried to read the radio with a GCAI programming cable. No communication.
What did I miss? What is the next step in troubleshooting?
Thanks in advance!
Kevin

1)Bad ground
2) bad control head flex
3) bad control head or fuse on control head(s)
4) bad internal fuse on uni board
5) bad trace or solder joint on uni board
6) bad connector on uniboard
7)radio programmed for acc. power and it is not there
Past that, I would need to see it on a bench

Kilgore: Smell that? You smell that?
Lance: What?
Kilgore: Napalm, son. Nothing in the world smells like that.
Kilgore: I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed, for 12 hours. When it was all over, I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' dink body. The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like... victory. Someday this war's gonna end...

Re: troubleshooting a dead XTL5000
I have dash mount XTL 2500's that have failed under warranty that got sent to the depot. About half said that there was a blown fuse inside the control head. Other half (mostly) came back with a control head swapped out note. I don't know for sure there is actually a fuse in the XTL 5K heads but somewhere to start. probably a chip fuse to boot...

We had the same issue with about 6 rebanded 2.5's, M paperwork said the same thing, we tracked down the part #, and started replacing them ourselves, much quicker than shipping to and from Mexirola.MSS-Dave wrote:I have dash mount XTL 2500's that have failed under warranty that got sent to the depot. IIRC there is a chip fuse on the uniboard as well.

I have to ask how you can go from an XTL1500 to a XTL5000 ? Am I missing something ?kb9mqu wrote:Greetings,

Re: troubleshooting a dead XTL5000
Thanks everyone for your help! I'll probably need to have someone else take a look at it, as I've done everything I know how to do. I'll post over in the FS/Wanted forum to see if I can pay someone to look at it and repair it (I assume that's the proper area for that)?jsikora wrote:I have to ask how you can go from an XTL1500 to a XTL5000 ? As far as XTL1500 to XTL5000, I'm not really sure; that's just what the seller told me. I've seen a couple other radios that say they have XTL1500 serial numbers but have been "upgraded". That's why I don't want to send this to the Depot (and the cost issue).

Just to confirm there is a fuse on the control head board also beside the little one in the radio board?
