I quit reading halfway through...drivel...But I will add to it !
Face it the only reason why MOST, and I emphasize that MOST..HAMS use it is to say "HEY LOOK AT ME I got a KEWL commercial radio...." De facto period..
Some others may actually use it for what it is intended for YMMV...
As far as the FCC goes..hmmm I question the fella you heard from saying it was OK..my uderstanding is that Part 97 especially part 97-305 does not inlcude MDC signalling...further even those that say 600 or 1200 bd MDC signalling can be considered data, does MDC signalling meet with::
§97.309 RTTY and data emission codes.
I think again most HAMS use it to sound kewl..that does not mean it is not annoying to listen to...I hate radio police....personally I like a single 749 hz or 500 hz Single tone....
Again YMMV.....

As for MDC over repeaters I don't really see the point since no ham gear supports it (and not many hams have commercial gear), but as far as I am concerned, ham *IS* all about experimenting and enjoying the hobby so if some folks wanna play with it, have fun!
I have two 900 MHz repeaters on the air here in Tucson. All of the users are using Motorola rigs. My wife got tired of the chatter so I set her Spectra up to respond to MDC. Now she hears nothing until I send MDC to open her Receiver.
If you want to use MDC on my repeater go for it.

OVER THE HILL type is more like it.Jonathan KC8RYW wrote:Some folks need to get a clue.
Do not allow these few "know-it-all" or "king-of-the-hill" types interfer with your goals, and perceptions of the hobby as a whole. Every bushel of apples has one or two with worms. It's up to us to ignore them, and don't let them spoil the whole bunch of us.
Sounds more like this guy was pissed he couldn't MDC, not to mention MDC call you or read your burst!

I think you should provide us all with this SIR's Call so when we are all at the Dayton show we can call him with our MDC and ask him how his goiter(sp?) is or his bowels are .
