Systemwatch??

Post by oh2lak »

Hello all.

There's been some threads about Systemwatch, which seems to be a trunking network system monitoring system.

What is exactly Systemwatch? Is it a software which utilizes for example a Spectra commanded to be a RF modem connected to the PC running the software, or is it a piece of hardware or these two together?

Where can I get the necessary parts to run systemwatch? I do have spare spectra radios which can be commanded to a RF modem mode.

It would be nice to monitor local trunking systems with this professional way, istead of the Trunker software and the serial-port "modem"

Contact via email or PM or continue the thread...

Systemwatch is a Motorola program that runs on a PC. It does use a Spectra (or one of several other radios) configured as an RF Modem. It also requires an interface called a RIM-II to go between the RF modem and the PC. This is a microprocessor based protocol converter.

You get all this from Motorola. The package will cost you about 10 grand. The software comes with a Rainbow hardware security key that must be installed on the PC.

Systemwatch won't run without the key.

My two bits worth:
There is another aftermarket program that does much the same as "System Watch." at a small fraction of the cost.
There is an interface box, and a trunking radio of some sort.
I can find out who makes this package if you are interested.

GenWatch

It's called GenWatch:

They sell you the modem and software but any trunking radio will work. I installed one with a GTX mobile. The price depends on how many talkgroups you want to monitor. The graphics are better than System Watch, too.

And of course there's Treport which is free. Excellent program. It would be nicer if you could get a Trunker type real-time display to go with it or switch between, but the real-time display lists events and messages in a scrolling fashion as they occur.

I've found that it is very good at tracking Smartzone systems and gives you details such as alternate sites and their control channels.

Plus the program will save the output for you for later analysis.

Check out http://www.trunkedradio.net for the latest version.

Not to bring up a old thread but you are mistaken about system watch.

I have been out of the radio biz for 5 years so there may be new software but I have a version of SYSTEM WATCH and a KEY generator. This is not a hardware key but a software key. The newer versions of system watch require a hardware key(kinda like a FTP key)

You don't need any special hardware (RIM or anything) to use system watch.

I have ran SYSTEM watch on my MTS2000, RIB, and 486-50 notebook.

Basically you needed a newer firmware radio.
There is a feature called RF MODEM
You turn it on. The radio does not need to have any system info programmed into it, it just needs this feature turned on.
Once the radio is programmed it will act like it is broken.
When you turn the radio on, the display will go into self-test and then go blank. This is normal.

You then run SYSTEM WATCH.
In order to run it you will need to know the following
SYSTEM ID
CONTROL CHANNELS
That is it.
Now, if you want see what channel they are talking on, then you need to punch in all the channels(freqs) they have.
It will then give you a channel break down
Basically a grid on the screen.
In each grid it will show the Talk group, User ID of any user that transmitted on that channel.

The SWII versions I have played with that have either been dongle hacked or have that codeplug deal are so out of date they aren't really too helpful. I suppose if you want to run it on an old SmartNet II system then it would be a bit more helpful.
