MX question

Post by level42 »

Just curious, did Motorola ever make a lowband MX series radio? I've never seen one. I'm kinda partial to the MX stuff and have a need for a lowband handheld. If I could find an MX lowband, that would be great, but I don't think they exist. Anyone ever seen one?

As far as I know, Motorola never made the low band version.

They did make an MX with a bandsplit of 68-80 mhz. Marketed mostly in
the european countries. I have seen a few on Ebay from time to time.

HI:

A good Motorola Low Band Hand-Held is the
P200 / MT1000 Series !

They do have ranges !

They are 42-50 Mhz, 36-42, and I beleive 30-36 Mhz, all
Programmable, and about the same size as a MX.

I have a few of them in the 36-42 Mhz Range if your needs
are in that area.

Depends on what MX you're talking about... The MX360 is CONSIDERABLY larger than a P200.... I couldn't even imagine how much an MX360 lowband would weigh... and with the really long antenna... wow!

MX Low Band

Post by dfc2 »

Well I don't recall the freq's, but WHile an MP in Germany (1985-1987), I worked Physical Security on a small post. We had a hand full of Air force SP's working there as well securing some fenced in area with a lot of antennas pointed east, as I sat a SKIF Desk, we had a radio and charger sitting behind us from them, in case they ever got into anything, they showed up once a week to re load a secure code into it, It was the MX series, have no clue what freq, but it's antenna was longer than the Low band MT500's we had.

It could have been the 66 mhz stuff, But I thought it was lower freq's than that....

In germany we use some MX 1000 - 3000 with the freq from 68 to 84 and from 74 to 88 MHz.
The antenna from the 68 MHz model is about 38 cm long...
In fact, its the best radio big M ever sold in germany! You can use it like a hammer... it works!
I have several models of them, some of them can be used on german EMS, police and fire freq.
There's even a special model for the government, called MX 3013 for 4 m and MX 3010 for 2 m.

But I'm sorry, I never saw one with a lower freq, and I saw lot of them

I am not talking the MX1000/3000 series... That's the Saber right? I am talking the MX310-360, most of what I saw were the MX350 (MX300-S). I sqaid I could be wrong, but I always thought it was the lower stuff.

Military MX in 68-80 Mhz.

Post by hfitzgerald »

Take this with a grain of salt, I'm not an expert on MX radios. I thought I saw 5 of the MX 350-S radios in the 68-80 Mhz split a year or so ago on eBay. They had N.A.T.O. stamped on the front of the cases in white letters and the convertacoms were the partial-clamshell black military style that looked like they could stop bullets. It was the first time I'd ever seen the military convertacom so I saved the eBay picture. I'll post it if I can find the disk.

Were the Convertacoms you saw black, with clamp on the side? allowed the radio to stand up in the holder, similar to the MTX8000 series? If so, sounds like the MX300-R convertacom. I used the 300-R at Ft. Bragg, great radios, they could take a bullit for you...bud too damn big....The Provost Marshall had one in his staff car....

MX300 R military convertacom

Post by hfitzgerald »

Now that I think about it, it was the R version and yes, the convertacom did allow the radio to stand upright. Infact, it could hold the radio in just about any position you chose to mout it in. I read on the http://www.batlabs.com site:
There exists a ConvertaCom for the RUGGEDIZED MX-300-R radios. It is UTTERLY BIZARRE. It is very rare and it was undoubtedly a VERY expensive item. It looks like it was made out of a surplus aircraft carrier. :)
I had no concept of what this would look like until I saw it. They weren't kidding.

I used to work on the MX series quite often many moons ago. I had seen one lo-bander MX at Dayton, I want to say maybe 10 years ago. This thing was pretty well beat to !@#$. If I recall, it was on the 40-50mhz split. The antenna? Yes, definitely an underarm tickler. I have some MX's from the 420 mhz range with PL, and some 800 mx's. The VHF's make great TRX';s for my tornado siren repairs.
