correct me if im wrong but wont you read about what goes on in the scanner in the paper anyway? plus i thought what goes over the airwaves is public information...and besides he who makes the radio will help make the scanner for the almighty dollar...its a game that will never end

No and No. Most of the what I care about on the scanner is NOT in the paper. Plus, if it is, it is usually entirely inacurate. There are plenty of things to be said over the air that are NOT public information, just like there are things not printed in the newspaper.

In canada I believe radio shack had a scanner
20-412 that was a 200 channel and had an option
ctcss board. The scanner was $629.00 canadian
then the tone board was $129.00

That did not last long. Then the radio sold for
$350.00 canadian dollars.

Anyone that was a ham sure found better deals
in the ham radio.Most people wanted to listen the the police who put 107.2 hz tone 1b (ctcss) on their radios.

Time will get the prices lower.New always is very costly.

And don't get me started with the anti Cellular and Paging monitoring rules that the FCC took bribes to enact...

Huh? I guess you're pretty damn upset the "evil" FCC prohibits unauthorized wiretaps, too!

The anti-monitoring laws are stupid...you can't legislate a system into
being secure (athough big business is trying that more and more lately

).
Making monitoring and monitoring equipment illegal won't
magically make an insecure system secure. If something is being transmitted
over the air and in the clear, people will monitor it, laws be damned.
The only way to discourage monitoring of radio signals is to either encrypt
or use protocols that make monitoring infeasable to everyone but the most determined.

Yes. That is very true. However, IMHO, there IS a difference between monitoring the local PD dispatch and scanning the local cell tower. In my opinion, cellular and paging systems are in the same group as any land-line telephone system.

True, making it illegal to scan on cell and paging systems does NOT make it secure. However, it does, like you said, make it difficult for all but the most determined persons to scan, say, a cell site. You cant go to RadioShack and buy a scanner capable of monitoring a cell phone.

Laws such as the ones enacted by the FCC are made to DISCOURAGE the ordinary person from breaking them. If it wasnt illegal to scan cellular frequencies, we'd all have our scanners tuned to the local tower. That's why many people monitor the local FD or PD....it's not illegal to do so.

Anybody who does wish to scan cellular or paging probably has more motive in mind than "well, these frequencies belong to the American people, so I have a right to hear other people's private conversations."
