Max. Programming Cable Length
This may seem like a strange question but, "What is the longest I can make a programming cable without running into problems?" Until I can get my laptop fixed, I need to field program ambulances with my desktop computer which will be setup in the back of a truck.
Thanks guys!
P.S Look almost at 100 posts! Momma would be proud!

Programming Cable
You don't need a long programming cable, you need a long PC to RIB or serial cable extension and you can make that quite long. I've run serial cables ove 50 ft. without a problem and would think you could go much longer. Years ago I debated this question with a Motorola shop for quite a while until we both realized we were thinking of the wrong cable.
HI:
If you are interested in our experiences, we found
pretty good luck ( but not all the time ) using a
Cable 20~25 feet was good enough for our applications.
Unfortunitely, due to the variations in Cable Size ( which
will make a difference ) and the Computer along with other
factors, you may or may not have the same luck. We did find
a few times, there was a problem reported, but 8 out of 10
worked....
To make sure the radio was programmed properly, we chose
to use a Toshiba T4700CT/CS Series, and that worked 100%
of the time with a Facotry Motorola Rib Box.....

Well, I really wish I could use the laptop, but I need to get it fixed...can anyone help?
I have a Toshiba CT610 with Win 95.
The problem I have is that when I shut it down or put it to sleep and try to restart or "wake it up", it doesnt. The unit powers up, fan comes on, but I get no screen or keyboard commands. I have tried to hard reboot, then I tried unplugging it for a day or so, but still when I try to turn it on it stays unresponsive. The only way to get it to come on is to sit there for hours hitting buttons, or a couple times I would be on one side of the house, and would hear a loud beep, and would find that the unit woke itself up and it displays a message box telling me there was a problem with standby or something.
Have anyone of you had this problem before?
Thanks,

We had a laptop that was doing something similar. Until we could afford a new one we found that if we removed all power (including the laptops battery) for about 5 Min, this would reset whatever glitch it had and boot normal. Also, you might want to try disabling sleep mode. That could help you isolate the problem. Best of luck!

PS We have a well shielded RIB cable that is 75' and works fine

We had a Corona (computer) in the truck and a 40 foot cable to the RIB to program Spectras and others in the field. The lenth of computer to RIB serial cable depends on the serial port specs. That is if the serial port has the proper transmit impeadance and voltage swing.
Our only problem was the FACTORY RIB not having enough voltage swing, and that was cured by changing four resistors in the RIB.
In some serial applications, 350 feet of unshielded twisted pair serial cable are used with no problems.

At the shop I used to work for, we could program at the computer, or plug in 1 of 2 cables that would let us program a mobile still in the vehicle. One went 30-40 feet to the install bay and the other went 40-50 feet to the front door(for vehicles in the parking lot) we plugged in a 20 foot cable and went to the vehicle from there. It worked great.

Laptop troubleshooting
Let's try some basics to see if it's hardware or software.
When your laptop comes alive again, go into the control panel and then go into the power settings and set everything to always on. (set it up like a desktop with no power conservation settings)
Then reboot the laptop and enter the Bios setup and disable all power management settings.
Hopefully, what we just did is eliminate any/all standby/hibernation settings and now it thinks it is a desktop.
Try it and see if it reacts properly, if it does then you're all set, if it does not then we will need to try a DOS boot disk to eliminate the Win95 operating system.
If you don't have a boot disk handy, go to http://www.bootdisk.com and download a DOS 6.22 boot image and make a disk. Boot the laptop with that and see if it behaves itself. If it does, then the Win95 OS is hosed and you will need to reload it, if it does not, then you are probably going to be needing ebay's laptop replacement service.
Good Luck,
Bob
