Question about serial numbers???

Question about serial numbers???
ok heres the story,
i have tried to buy a couple mts2000s for a few neigboring depts that needed a few radios (800 mhz model 3 trunking) and as we all know most of the radios that have had case changes dont have the original factory tag on them. and we all know you can go into the service mode on the radio holding it in your hand and look at the rss version, model #, SERIAL #, and flashcode! now heres the problem! our head of thecommunications dept will not allow a radio to put on the system without an original tag! now he tells me that the serial number you see in the service mode can be changed and replaced with another! i was just wondering if this is true? im not asking to try it or anyhting by no means b/c i dont evn think it can be done. i just want to be able to know weather or not i should say anything at our next association meeting! i think looking for radio just b/c of the tag is a big waste of time when local depts. need radios! just wondering about the ? above and what you think i should do about this? any thing i could say to try to change his mind? local depts are pretty upset to! this is a new rule and there are radios ont he system now with out tags so any info would be appreciated! thanks

It sounds like you have a real "tool" running your system.
If you send it to M to the depot they will put a white thermal labeler type label on it. You might search for other stuff about this topic. I know one other guy had a question about depot labels and ended up doing a good job reproducing them.

Just a point here. MTS2000's should not be missing a S# label due to a case change. The serial# is on the metal chassis of the radio and being
it's covered by the battery when the battery is in place they usually hold up pretty well unlike the paper labels that were on the housing exterior
on other models that either got worn off or either as you say were missing due to a plastic housing changeout. The only legit. reason I've seen for a Jedi needing a chassis replacement is some real good drops on a hard surface breaking the battery retainer ears off the bottom, then I'd
think twice about putting a radio abused in that manner into public safety service. Just my 2 cents.

This is true, The Labels on the MTS2000 are on the metal side closest to the battery, If just the case's were changed than why are there not any labels.?

not totally true...the early Jedi housings had a problem with the antenna connector coming loose. The only way to fix is to order the replacement casting, which is now part no REX4595A, a retrofit kit which also includes an updated centering pin that holds the RF board in place. The loose antenna connector is a common problem on Jedi's made before June of 1995. The later revision housings used a pin stuck through the side of the connector to keep it from working loose. I have replaced several of them on our old HT1000's. And interestingly enough, the REX4595's I have bought have a black label on them- with NOTHING inscribed!RadioSouth wrote:Just a point here. Any sys admin can read the s/no in RSS and make a quick call to Ma M and see the history of the radio. Replacing a housing on a 10 year old radio is a normal practice, especially when new and improved replacement parts become available.

This is what happened to mine. The antenna started just popping out. I then found out there was a pin on the newer versions that held the antenna connector in. I just had to get another back. I have not had any luck with getting the old lable's to stick to the chassis after peeling them off and putting them back on, probably why M makes new ones when you depot the radio, hell, if we pulled every radio our of PS that had been dropped or had a battery tab broke off.... M stock would be back up to $86 a share. We generally replace the parts that need it, and send it out, why pay $300 for 1/2 hour of labor and $100 worth of parts.

I have heated them up before, usually the corners don't stick quite as well as before, maybe I should quit using a blowtorch to heat them up. I see lots of radio's that are past being able to be repaired.... economically, Jedi products don't like 125+ ft. drops onto concrete, or vactor trucks running over them, had them come in that were dropped in gray water tanks.... they rinsed them off first, just not inside, in swimming pools, rivers, the last good fiasco seen was a Jedi type III run over by a Cat dozer, bent in half, they brought it in thinking they could get a new front put on it and be good to go, hahahahahahaha.

You might try sending them to Motorola for new tags. I do not know if they still do it or what they charge but they use to retag radios for a small fee, but you had to send the radio to them, they will not send you the tag.
When did Gold Hill and the surrounding area go 800, I lived back there for about a year and then moved to Faith for about two years before moving back to California. Back then , they were all on VHF.

hey all,
thanks for all the replys!!! i am goin g to get in touch with motorola and see about retaging ALL the radios i have sittin here that my county cant use! who do i contact? Motorola direct? the depot? can anyone supply any numbers for who to contact while i search for them? thanks again everyone!!
p.s. - to metro121: we went 800 about 7 years ago! fire, salisbury PD, county sheriff, school maintence, EMS, the whole nine yards uses it! we have well over 700 mts2000 model 3s in the fire service alone! we love it! all radios have private call and telephone interconnect and all the zones for all the above listed !!

i should be getting the paperwork to fill out to go to the techs at the depot in a day or two! i feel the paperwork out and send it back then motorola sends me a quote and then i decide wether or not i want to have them retag the radios! i will let you know how much they charge me for each radio! it should be the same both being jedi series radios! thanks for all the replys from everyone here on batlabs!!!!!!!!!
