[quote="jcobb"]What I always liked was when you had a professional radio, professional install in a location with hams - whenever the hams had a problem with their equipment, they would unplug our equipment "because it might have been causing problems".
You could never catch them at it, which was lucky for them...
Their install looked a lot like the one above.
=========================================
At one site I took care of, we had two ham voice (UHF) and one packet network (VHF and UHF 19.2KB backbone) box...the State Forest Service had a Midland BaseTech VHF rptr with a GasFet preamp on its front end....needless to say, the rptr locked up at odd hours and they blamed the ham packet hear for it....sooooo I went by the site one night, and unplugged the packet box....next morning, the Midland rptr was squealing away as usual....I called the Forest Svc MANAGER (I gave up talking to the radio tech there!) and told him the situation...and offered to call the FCC into the problem if his tech kept insisting the ham stuff was the problem..the local FCC Egr in Charge was/is an old high school friend of mine and already knew of the problem...I told the manager, move the antenna to the top of the 500ft tower-they were only at 300ft and the tech wanted better HT coverage, hence the PREAMP on an already HOT rcvr...it heard better than 0.2uV without the preamp!- AND get rid of the preamp!! needless to say, the Tower mgr called me later on...thanked me for getting the Forest Svc to go higher on the tower..The Forest Svc manager offered ME a job with them...but I was making much more money already and I didnt want to have his tech under me anyway!
and the ham packet box got plugged back in and ran with no problem...my IFR 1500 and HP8920 confirming there were no spurs, etc.....
But yes, SOME CRAP is just that...CRAP!! I have seen stuff on 1500ft towers that should be thrown OFF from the top...in both commercial and ham service!
