Using MURS Frequencies in Canada?

I've done a search on the web and I couldn't find any information about MURS (former VHF business band) use in Canada. I currently use Motorola M-Series radios set on MURS frequencies to communicate while snowboarding. I'm taking a trip to canada this December and I want to know if it will be okay to use my VHF radios there. Or if it's even okay to use my FRS radios. I'd rather not use FRS just because everyone and their grandmother will probably be using those frequencies. Any advice and/or information would be much appreciated. Thank you.

I believe it's a no go on using them in Canada. You can use FRS there though.

And now its time to cue the radio snobs (read: geeks) who start whining about how 'unkewl' FRS is.

OMG 7EH FRS |Z TEH $UXXX0RZ!!1 LOL!!!1!!

FRS is cool for what it is. A short range, low power personal point to point communication service. I just hate using FRS on the ski slopes because you get interference even when running tone squelch. I don't mind people talking, but it's the annoying call tones that really make my blood boil. The people using FRS on the ski slopes aren't doing anything wrong. FRS has just become very very popular. Away from the slopes is where it gets crazy. I have guys in my area that admit to running maxtracs with 100 watt amps. They are on FRS running wide band with annoying signalling systems they have no clue about. Then you have some guys running amateur equipment with amps. Amateur radio + 100 watt amp + power/echo mic = Lots of splash on GMRS frequencies. FRS has gotten out of hand in my area. But I'm sure nothing will be done.

Thanks for the info guys. I figured MURS wouldn't be legal there. FRS it is then.

If Heterodyne doesn't consider himself a 'Radio Geek' he needs to look a bit closer
in the mirror. Anyone that frequents this board is a 'Radio Geek', not that there's anything wrong with that.

I prefer to think of myself as a 'enthusiast'....

What about officianado or radioequinologist?

I don't know if both are 'real' words though.

I could bill myself as a 'radiologist', but medical diagnostic equipment scares me.

FRS channels

I find if I program a REAL radio with the FRS channels they work a lot better. I recently put them in 1550-xls ports. Turned the power down to 2 watts and narrow band. No interference, and you can use DPL. not very common yet.

An MTS2000. FRS channels. Five watts. MDC-1200.

Lets rock. :)

Wow, you folks are pretty stupid if the frequencies you are using are the "467" FRS frequencies, not the "462" GMRS/FRS interstitals which already allow up to 5 watts and 25khz wide-band operation on them.

Let's hope you've also got a valid GMRS license instead of pirating up the band making it just as wortheless as 27Mhz CB radio.

The DPL idea is good. Except "real radios" are just too big for snowboarding. Unless I pick up 2 EX600s.

There is NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO such thing at GMRS in Canada, my friend.

And before you insult me and call me stupid, look at my message before you wildly hop in and add your 0.02 - I guess I must have been a little lucid when I wrote it, because I don't remember condoning it.. hmmm?

Nothing makes a radio 'afficinado' more froth-at-the-mouth angry than FRS. I find it an endless source of amusement.

Well, if you're all using high power non-FRS radios in Canada, that's your business and you can do as you please. I could care less, however, bending the rulings of the FCC here in the United states is just asking for trouble.

Maybe you can help me.

Here is what I wrote:

I don't see it, but maybe you can tell me where I said that I do such a thing in what I wrote. Maybe its because I'm working double shifts all this week, but you must see something I don't.

Because I DIDN'T.

Keep on truckin'

I see on the left side of the screen, under your user-name, Toronto Canada.

5 watts on FRS, however, is 10 times the legal limit. 12.5Khz spacing fits the bill for the service specs, however the fact that the radio also has a detatchable antenna makes it illegal as well.

I am pretty sure that Canadian FRS radio specs match US's however because you're breaking Canadian law and I live in the U.S. it "all of a sudden" doesn't really matter anymore.

:o :o :o

OMG!!!

Okay, okay. So you know the regulations regarding FRS - your medal is in the mail.

You're either pretty stupid or not bothering to read anything that I've written thusfar. Either way, I've got no time for ya. Sigh.

Its pretty retarded that I'm somehow feeling compelled to defend myself to you, but here goes: "I am not advocating breaking the law, nor have I ever admitted doing so in that respect. Read my previous message to you above. I made a comment, thats all."

End of discussion, unless you have some other facts and figures you'd like to parrot out before the day is through.[/i][/b]

How is Heterodyne breaking the law?

I agree with him, he never once said that he was doing it. And even if he was, what business is it of yours?

These self righteous radio geeks just love to but in with their own little nuggets of knowledge. Its as bad as watching Star Trek with a Trekkie - five minutes can't pass without them tossing in one of their geeky facts just to prove they know more about it than you.
