Receiving mdc IDs on astro

Post by mancow »

A stupid question I suppose but here it goes. Can an astro saber display the IDs of units as they key up with mdc? It seemed I saw a message about this in the past and someone mentioned that only the dispatch consoles were capable of this.

Simple answer: Yes. As long as it has the MDC flash.

OK, what fields (variables) need to be entered. I am referring to the unit ids, variable ids etc... I know the unit ID is the mdc # sent upon keyup and that just refers to what is transmitted. I am just wondering if the message fields need to be utilized.
Example: Say unit 250 transmits with the corresponding mdc id on his radio. For me to see 250 on the display would a message field with 250 need to be programmed somwhere for the radio to reference, or is the radio actually decoding the id straight from what it hears and not referencing it to a look up table (message field).

Does that make sense? :o

I looked at the programming manual and it looks like you need to have the ID(s) programmed into a call list.

I would have thought so too but, no. It worked just fine and displayed the entire id. Go figure? :)

What radios do you own?: X9000 thru APX

What is curious is that the RSS says it will show an alphanumeric ID, but it will only show the actual unit number.

When they say alphanumeric they are making reference to the fact that MDC ID's are hex and can contain A,B,C,D,E,&F as well as 0-9, but it is confusing - they could have said it much better.

It is amazing that these radios won't alias the ID by matching to the call list - even the lowly Maxtrac can do that!

Remember that on an ASTRO system you can have up to eight "Soft ID's" after the MDC id which can be both numbers and/or alphabet. I.E. FPS-1352.
