I can see it now - somebody posts a question here and the answer is:

Just send me 50 bucks by Paypal and I'll answer that for you!

Here is the inspiration for this new idea:

So, Jeremi -

Your "informal" name is FFCARTER46?

But at official functions, you are FFCARTER4687?

Just curious.

Personally, I don't think the hobbie for me would have taken off in the direction it has if I hadn't known about batlabs. I credit someone I was talking to on a local repeater who happened to be using a maratrac in a jeep... he told me to go read up on some stuff on batlabs, and I was rather impressed.

Needless to say, the hobbie grew as funds were avalible....

If this guy does come here to ask the questions he gets asked, and collects the money for someone elses hard work, I won't be too thrilled personally. But that's life.

keep it free, and donate to both Jon and Bat to keep this alive.

HI:

Be Thankful !!

If it would have been me ( on the professional end ) it would
not have been 20.00

It would have been 250.00 ( min ) an YES, I do charge that
( and more ) when I have to take on the responsibility if
what ever I might say is wrong or does not turn out as
expected, and required to follow up in writting.

Some Doctors even perform surgery by television !

Well, I have done Radio Repairs by showing detailed
photos of what to do, and how to do it....And that does
work !

If the fellow in question wants to sell he thoughts and ideas
for 20.00 Great ! I am sure with his 20 Plus Years of experience
means something.

However, when taking advice, one should request how good the background foundation is.

Does the fellow have [ Any ] Factory Experience?
FCC Licensed? ( and Date )
CET Certified ( and Date )
Ham License ( and Date )
Professional College?

All of these can contribute to [ How Good ] the advice may
be, and in to days world, getting good advice is getting harder
to find....

Since 1999, Motorola has laid off more than 70.000 professional
persons on the belief a Monkey @ a Computer Terminal can do
the same job, and work for bananas instead of 50,000 ~ 100.000.00 a year....WRONG !

Ever wonder why the information one gets many times
from Motorola is fragmented and manytimes useless?

If you don't believe it, just look at the Popularity of the Batlab
Site....

You have a wealth of information from a cross section of
Hams to Professional persons across the world to assist
one for perhaps some donations

It can't get much better than that !!

I donate often to the support of the Batlab site & Forum which
is Privately supported by a limited few.

I am sure you can figure where some of the monies
that are donated to Batlabs comes from. ( I hope )

Anyhow, Risking ones reputation for Chicken Feed, well
its cheaper than bananas.

My two bits worth:
Free advice is worth what you pay.

I note that there are many members on this forum, whose only radio knowledge is knowing how to spell Motorola.
On the other hand there are members that are true professionals, and make their living engineering, selling, installing, and maintaining communication equipment.

I have been in this business for about 40 years, and I owe in part my success to many people that would take their time to answer my questions.

I have no problem answering questions, and attempting to explain the problem to persons that evidently do not have a clew.

There are many Motorola product lines that I know little or nothing about. I have no problem posting to the forum, and I usuially get the answer to my question.

In my observation if just clearing up a question clears the problem, fine, but most of the time for complex problems it requires that you physically visit the site and fix the problem.
This should be fully billable. I just returned from a 2 week trip to optimise 2 trunking systems in Alaska.

I have allways enjoyed talking shop.
Aloha, Bernie

20 bucks and all you get is to ask three question via EMAIL? That's a rip.

It's a like a genie in a bottle and screwing up twice with only having that last question to clear things up.

So, if I bid an entire 50 cents on this, you think we could come up with a "stump the tech" forum?

Well, I know a few people that are quite knowledgeable in Motorola, and radios in general.

Personally, I feel confidant that with their knowledge, and my nack for these things, and my desire to learn, I don't think there's any problem I'd encounter that I couldn't solve on my own.

Sure, it might take countless sleepless nights, but, hey, isn't that how we learn?

I had a problem awhile back with a Motorola M216 mobile. It didn't want to output any audio. Anyway, it turned out to be a bad transistor. I didn't really have any techie friends at that time, so I spend probably close to 3 weeks with a multi-tester. No service manual, and no clue what the heck I was doing. I just traced all the logical things I could think of. It took awhile, but I fixed it.

Story here? I learned by doing. If I had just called someone and he said "Yeah, check Q551" or whatever, that would have gotten it fixed much faster, but would I have learned how to do it myself?

Obviously, in the business, you often need it fixed yesterday, so you don't have time to explore everything yourself. However, I don't think his tech services are really geared towards the professional technician, more so, the "one man band" operation, who usually has the time to tinker.

Just my 2 cents, but, if everyone could just call someone for an answer, nobody would learn anything!!!

This site, BatBoard, has helped me many times, I am greatfull for that, and I am willing to help here with my years of experiance at no charge. I have repaired many radios for BatBoard members as well.

Some of us out here have gotten together and formed the BatTeam West which can come up with technicnal and engineering help for anyone in a reasonable travel range. We also help with tec/eng support for the local Ham and a few GMRS repeaters here too.

And If I do not know the soulution to your problem, I go to my lab and work on it to provide answers for the BatBoard members.

Bill,

You can goto the main page of the Board - http://batboard.batlabs.com and in the header of the page you'll see the rules. In there is a button you can click with make donation.

Jon does have a server fund for when he needs hardware, but I think he likes running it, and as long as his cost is free, than well, so is ours.
