XTL 5000 7/800 to 900?

I have two M20URS9PW1AN XTL 5000s. I was using them on a smartnet trunking system, but that system is being changed to DMR Connect Plus.
So, I now have no use for these. I’ve heard it may be possible to get them up on the 900mhz ham band, and I remember reading something a while back about cutting off part of a VCO so the radio could lock at the higher frequencies.
I’m relatively dumb when it comes to working on radios, but since I don’t know what to do with them, and they don’t seem to have much value, I’d like to take a whack at it if it’s possible.
Can anyone steer me in the right direction, or am I being stupid?
