DIU3000 and External Speaker

Anyone ever hooked up an external speaker via the 25 pin I/O connector on the back of a DIU?
I am guessing it needs an amplified speaker as I have tried all the moto speakers I have handy and the audio is extremely low, but I cannot find any information at all for speaker requirements, part numbers ect. beyond the pinn-out in the manual. Maybe chop the leads of a cheap PC amplified speaker set?
